Nipper has a project at school and wants to make a S/S table with a glass top. Looking for some plans that will aid him. Doesn't want anything that requires welding as it is something he can't do himself. Something modern like the attached link

Why not introduce him to CAD, (Sketchup or Turbocad can be had for free). That way he can take the project from start to finish, and begin to learn another valuable skill.

Hi Nige, he could make the stainless design from flexiply - 2 layers glued together around a barrel as a former. spray it silver and job is a good 'un.
If money is no object Suregrave do a brushed stainless effect plastic engraving laminate which could be bonded to both sides of the ply.
Is this an exam piece or just a personal project? Does he have to make a model first? Top would need to be toughened with polished edges- can get expensive

Hi Mike, it is a school project. Plans leading to construction of piece.

He came up with some great ideas but the tooling at school is limited. He can't weld either and most of his ideas required that.. It has to be his work....although plans of the net are a bit of a cheat will give him more ideas to create without welding or having unsightly joins.
Would have been sooo much easier if he had chosen wood.

We have pretty good facilities and most of the kids opt to work with wood and we keep away from stainless, the mig has done more exhaust repairs than school projects!
Classic problem with teenagers is they all want to make fantastic jobs without doing the hum drum stuff that gives them skills (we have all been there of course) the exam boards tend to want to see lots of development going into the final designs which can be made using the skills and facilities available.
Unless they have done a lot of metal work or are highly motivated / enthusuiastic/gifted we would be guiding them into a more user friendly project- they get no marks for the toughened glass which is some one else's work. It is ironic that the jobs that get the best marks may not be the most stylish or innovative.

My son had a chat with the teacher today. Said that if he designed a geometric table using autocad that worked he would get a good grade though the design process. This would then compensate for any out-sourcing of materials.
