Model airplane diesel two stroke engines

Hi Guys,

My design project at uni this year is to design a two stroke compression ignition engine for a model airplane capable of producing 0.06BHP at 12000 RPM.

I am looking to find different specifications of different engines already on the market to help with my decisions of bore/stroke ratio, compression ratio, capacity, displacement etc.

Does anyone know anything or know when i can find any general information with regards to this?

Try speaking to PAW (Progress Aero Works) who are/were a UK manufacturer of many years of diesels.
also if you can get hold of him, Ken Morrisey from Irvine engines is a mind of useless info on diesels and ex brit and world champion.

as im sure you are aware, glow plug motors are semi compression ignition motors too, iev known them run with blown plug elements purely on the compression, albeit a bit off tune.

another vital firm to speak to is Model Technics in shoeburyness, they are the UKs biggest fuel blender and will give you the low down on fuel specs, which are of course linked to the desired output of your motor project. Often the racier fuels require the carb/Compression settings to be near spot on, whereas their Easy Start fuels the settings can be a fair bit off and the thing will still fire up (usually back firing and whacking the hell outta ya finger!)

I haven't seen a diesel R/C engine for some years, they were mostly available in Europe, easily distinguished from Nitro engines as there is a wing nut on the top of the cylinder head to raise and lower the compression for starting and running, tuning.
Have a look on ebay or at hobby shops that have been in business for some time.

Ive seen a few diesel conversions on nitro engines at my local R/C club.

I remember seeing Paul E, son of Gig, flying in control line aerobatics at Three Sisters in mid to late 80s, very handy pilot too.

Have a look at Davis Diesels in the states, they do conversion kits
Diesel smells though....

Model Diesel engines smell so much nicer than glow engines

Wow thats a flash back! used to have a PAW and a Webra for combat planes many years ago. Still got the Webra dunno what happened to the PAW tho'
