what could cause a loud rattling just above tickover and on lift off in a 1800 vauxhall ohc ,checked pullys etc but sounds internal ,no loss of poke and driveability

thought better check oil very low infact very very very low so am now thinking knackered big ends etc

what other engine choices do i have that will fit getrag box from manta

Because it's pronounced when you lift off it could well be failed big ends. The rattling is caused by the pistons hitting the cylinder head - a function of loads of clearance at the big end!

vauxhall XE 16v, the obvious choice, or, if you are on a tighter budget (not that they are expensive) then get a 2.0 8 valve vauxhall lump out of a late 8 valve cav sri, they are 130hp as std and bulletproof (as long as you keep the oil level right!) they made them with 8 valvers up to '93 iirc

10 points to dave walker ,yep big ends ,good news is have aquired spare engine so hopefully not of road long
just my luck though ,just getting sunny here
