Who's are they or did you make them yourself / had them fabricated for you?

Got to agree here they are the dogs danglies.
How are you fixing your wings Gav?
I'm thinking of sticking using Evo-Stick liquid metal. I've trial stuck some bits of scrap steel and ally to scrap fibre glass and the grp breaks before the adhesive when tested to destruction.

Hi,
Did you guys have to bend the stays yourselves or were they pre-formed? I had to bend the flat bar which was a bit of a trial and error exercise but they are certainly well designed.

I'm not sure that you want the GRP to break before the bond to be honest as it might be better if the wing was to break away in an impact. I think what is perhaps more important is that there is a degree of flexibility in the bond to absorb vibration and prevent fatigue failure. I was planning to use Sikaflex or similar. What do others think is the best way to fix the wings to the stays? I don't want to use any bolts or screws.

Cheers,
Craig.

Im not sure yet as i have not recieved my GRP yet.
However was thinking of 1 of 2 ways,
the first forming the flats to the shape of the wings then either bolting/riveting them to it or as you say using some form of adhesive.
I think ill be going down the adhesive route as i dont like the idea of bolts/rivets showing on the wings.

Edit: Mine came unbent.

Darrens recomended method for bending is to fit wheels and tyres, fit wing stays (unbent) use a piece of roughly 1" x 1" wood and place tat on the tyre. Then commence to bend the stay around the profile of the tyre starting at the inside edge and moving the wood outwards as you go. You should then end up with the stay approx 1" clear of the tyre and a similar profile to your wing. It's then just a matter of making minor adjustments to fit the wing for gluing which is also a GTS recommendation as opposed to bolting.
I should point out that I haven't actually done this yet but Darren assures me it works well.
When I said the GRP fails first I meant that the adhesive pulls the surface of the GRP away not destroys it completely.

Heres a pick of the wing stay for those that havent seen them.
The bottom eye locates onto the lower balljoint thread and the top horizontal tube locates to the clamp for the mushroom adaptor, ill have to find a longer bolt that.

When I designed those the flat plate sections were shaped to go over the wheel/tyre. That isn't going to be too easy to do now as they need to twist as well to keep the flat level with the tyre.
There was even a jig to make life easy.

I thought you might have to twist them a little but couldnt tell how much as i dont have the wings yet.

Still its a nice design a lot better than some other example ive seen that look like they are gonna drop off as soon a guest of wind gets near them

Best to wait but the steel needs to follow the diameter of the tyre anyway if that makes sense.

I would cut and weld the plate rather than try to wallop it round a bit of wood...as the wood will be bouncing off the tyre

Who mentioned "walloping" anything?
I think a little finesse is called for here.

Are you working to some hidden agenda hereTriton?
You seem to contradict anything and everything to do with GTS products.

I for one find it a little tedious.

pardon me...not contradicting.
Just offering advice...5mm plate won't bend with a tap it needs a wallop with a rubber timmy just in case you miss and smack something else.

Why would I try to put down something I made in the first place?.....the d/d axle, the wishbones, the wing stays etc were all made by me in the first instance.

Gav,
That's interesting seeing your photo of the wing stay. The GTS stays that I got are a complete triangle so you have to split the top balljoint to remove them. I guess they have decided that the extra leg of the triangle is unnecessary or is this the Sierra version (mine fit the Cortina uprights). It's is bit of a pain to have to split the balljoint when removing and refitting the stay. Mine also bolt to the Cortina uprights with two bolts instead of just one as appears here.

When I bent mine I got the main curve around the tyre shoulder by bending the bar over a piece of 2" pipe (after marking the position of the bend. I then just adjusted the rest of the bar to suit the tyre profile.

Cheers,
Craig.

GTS is a kit car supplier, not a religion, and Triton is not blaspheming, a good percentage of the stuff bearing the name is down to him. Hence he does know a little bit about it.

You won't need to do any walloping, i bend them by hand most of the time. Using a spacer on the tyre gets you close then you can just tweak them a bit by hand (usually without the wheel on) to get them nice and flat across the top.

A bit of Loctite Seriously Strong Stuff has kept my wings on for 18 months or more. You need to fit them last thing at night and leave them to dry over night so they are stuck fast, a generous blob allows you to fit the wings in just the right place, and tight to the wheel as well unlike the Caterham style that are in mid air.
