I seem to remember a hack for these that enabled you to watch movies without plugged the unit into the phone line. I seem to recall also that this
meant a huge bill for the next punter who plugged the unit back in!

I've been after one for a while. Seems eBay is the only option, and it's just as 'cheap' to get one from Sky. If you ring
and moan, you can get on for £49 on a basic subscription or free if you have movies or sport.

Ta Chris. I spoke to Sky and because I already have one HD box it counts me out for the deal unless I pay 109 quid and take out a second HD
subscription at another tenner a month. No thanks Sky. I'm only after a box to replace the std sky+ that's died in another room and will
probably only watch BBC HD. I'm very wary of ebay due to the probs I've had with my HD box (it's been replaced three times). However
a refurb box from a reputable seller looks like the best option.

sky will definately give you one if you tell them you will quit unless they do! i got an extra one without the subscription.or tell them its faulty
and keeps freezing which they nearly all do and they will bring you another one and wont take existing one away!

Will they try and charge you for "installation", i.e. 60 seconds worth of plugging it into existing wires?

Clearly I am not bolshy enough. The best I've been offered is 109 (49 plus 60 install) and a tenner a month for the HD sub. I had a real fight
to get my main HD box replaced for free late last year as I was an early adopter and it was way out of warranty.

Just as reference (incase you go the second hand route) the early Thomson HD boxes (the ones with component out) have a known and documented PSU
problem (cheap diodes) and as a result WILL fail at some point unless an upgraded PSU PCB has been fitted.
It's also been mentioned that they give out the incorrect voltage on their HDMI port and have damaged equipment they have been attached to.

Double post.

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

It's a good point. Although I had a Samsung and a Pace fail too. They are clearly built to a price. I am now sorted with a Samsung box.
