New "Motah"

Got my new car last Friday. Took it to Cornwall over the weekend for a test run. So far 10/10.

Far too sensible!

Nice car, apparently the engine is like the Honda VTECs of old

I'm pondering a Supra GZ TwinTurbo for my next car, I must be mad.
If anyone knows of a UK manual car with minimal mods and under 100k on the clock then I might be interested...

Hehe, it hadn't occured to me that I hadn't posted for aaages

News is that Jon has moved out and is now living with his dad in Milton Keynes and the locost (well most of it) has made the journey up there. It's unlikely that I'll be a part of the project from now on TBPH which kinda makes me sad but that's the way it is.

I've not lost interest in the whole Locost thing though. I have plans to build my own, possibly an MK or similar in the not too distant future. Main priority now however is to buy a house (hopefully with some kind of garage, carport or big shed)

How's yours coming along?

Should be fun...

did a quick comparison and it performs about the same as my new tin top (on paper), spookily I took mine to cornwall for it's first outing too!

Toyota Corolla 1.8
190Bhp
180Nm Tq (@6800rpm!)
1255Kg kerb weight

Fiat Stilo 2.4 Abarth
170Bhp
221Nm Tq (@3500rpm)
1150kg kerb weight

looks like your gonna have to scream the balls off it to get best performance - 6800rpm!!!!

No doubt a damn sight more reliable than my Fiat though

so screaming the balls off a 1.8 or using low down grunt in a 2.4, wonder which one will be most fuel efficient

Ned.

Yeah, you have to give it some stick to get it going but it's the same Yamaha engine that's in the Elise/Exige.

The variable valve lift kicks in at 6250 RPM so just as the opposition is changing gear you get a surge of power. You pass them like they just threw down the anchors! The sound at 8000 RPM is just amazing!

I reckon low 7 seconds 0-60 time.

I did 40MPG on my 70MPH drive down to Cornwall.

I managed to halve that when I was "testing out" the potential locally.

What's the insurance like on the Corolla compared to a Civic Type-R?

According to Parkers website:

Toyota - Gp14
Fiat - Gp 15 (although I got gp 14 off my insurer ?)
Honda - Gp 17

Civic will beat me away from the lights but above 40 I leave them standing!

Yeah the CTS is a lot cheaper than the CTR to insure. A lot more refined too although not quite so fast. That said in the wet the TC on the CTS will mean it can beat the CTR away from the lights.

Indeed, wet traction on the CTR is rubbish, some non-intrusive TC would have been a good idea I think. I got totally spanked by a Saxo VTS off the lights on a damp hill (going up) when I had my friend's CTR for a while.

Launching a honda VTEC properly has always been a little tricky but once you're moving in the CTR it really flies, it's faster to 0-100mph than a Impreza WRX which is impressive as the impreza has around a second on the Civic by 60mph.

I'm pondering getting a more powerful car soon (currently have a Puma 1.7) but I'm not sure if I actually need/want it. The Puma is fun at license-safe speeds whereas the new breed of hot hatches or sports coupes (and for that matter a mid-90s Supra TT) are all too comfortable at much higher speeds and you need to push harder and be going faster to have as much of a giggle and it's all too easy to be doing license loosing speeds without even trying.

Quite true. It's incredibly easy to pull out of a junction and be doing 90 plus before you know it. So I'm told....

Damn!!!!

I was feeling smugg with my Honda CRX engined Rover which limits at 7250rpm until I read this thread. Mind you, its only a 1.6!!!!!

Anyone got the VTEC head I can bung on it?

Mark

A quick look at the Type-R's specs reveals

2.0L capacity
197 Bhp
196Nm tq @ 5900rpm
1204 Kg kerb weight

but 0-60 in 6.6 secs (on paper)

so how does a heavier car with less torque accelerate faster ? never understood that one ? is just down to gear ratios ?
