Pinto cam timing
Having passed sva and now driving about,im doing the bits and pieces to finish off/improve etc.want to recheck the cam. What is the best way to set cam
given the valve open/shut...tdcl...full lift figures seem to be hypothetical ie you never get them all right together. Please feel free to rip that
apart.

5 - 7 degrees advanced, you measure the valves half way open, halfway closed and devide to find the mid point.

Robocop,
the crank pulley should just come off with a bit of persuiation (unless it has been lock tighed on).a combination of pulled and knocking stick is
the next action..
If you are going to the effort of using a DTI to set the advance figures on the cam then i would find TDC with the DTI and split the degree of crank
rotation whilst hte piston is at TDC at the point where in the movment is only rotational in the crank and the Piston remains static.
Alternativly you can set the cam timing by lift measurement and not duration as the it is difficult to ensure the base circle of the lobe is correct
.
Hope this helps..

A:bought a puller as no ammount of levering, tapping and WD40 soakings worked on the crank - the cam pulley almost fell off when I took the bolt
out

Normally aspirated pintos the pulley is tight but will normally fall ofwith minor persuasion.
Injected pinto's for what ever reason are always dead tight and normally need a puller.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Yes i agree, especially if you have a non standard cam as the majority of aftermarket high lift cams are re-profiled strandards and not ground from a
blank, so if you are look for a real true lift figure then you should use a DTI and set you cam timing to lift figure and not a duration figure.
hope that helps.. Andrew
