Blown Turbo
My pal's 2004 mondeo tdci130 has just blown it's turbo (having last week had £700 on a clutch). he's faced with a main dealer
wanting £1000 for the replacement unit plus fitting.
just wondered if there's anywhere else to get one from. or if there's a specialist who could rebuild it (the dealer said that was an
option, but cant recommend anyone)

definately worth hunting out a local turbo specialist who should be able to recondition / replace the turbo at much cheaper cost.
Where abouts are you?? If he can replace it himself then maybe try someone like these guys

Get the code/type from the turbo. Then you can check Ebay etc to find a new/reconditioned one. See if the dealers price is about the same or not. The
price excl labour.

Be aware that nobody is cheap for replacement turbos - some are cheaper than others though.
Turbo Technics were helpful when mine went. If he sends the old one back to them they will assess by return whether it can be re-built.
Certainly on my SAAB it proved to be not too difficult a job - it's only 10 or 12 nuts and bolts but a set of off-set spanners proved
critical!!!!
Just be careful to ensure all oil feed lines are free flowing and that you use loads of fresh oil when assembling and at first start up.
An afternoon/ evening spent googling around the subject should provide lots of info.
Cheers, Pewe

some turbos cant be rebuilt per se , and need new parts , but turbo technics or universal turbos do a good service , theres also a place in nottingham
that does it , not much change out of £500 .

I suspect lag might be an issue though

Saw one on a Smart recently - about the size of an egg cup. Must be something to do with the Swiss and watches.........
BTW useless fact of the day - the Swiss were originally offered the rights to the quartz chip but declined it as they thought there wouldn't be
a market!

I've just googled Smart Turbo! You're right they are tiny.
Wonder if you could bolt four of them up in parallel? Hmmm direct from exhaust to throttle body! 4 intercoolers though
