airbox for zx9r - noise issues
Got kicke doff at Doni last night for induction noise (99.7DB on drive by). So what do i do to get the noise down?
1. Standard ZX9r E Bike airbox (will C model boxes fit?)
2. make my own box and route pipes into car somewhere
3. use a standard airbox from another bike
4. Are there any non standard airboxes designed for BECS i can buy?

Recently went throughg this with my R1. There is a generic pipercross box you can get with a blank plate but it needs a lot of space.
http://www.pipercross.net/competition/products_600_airbox.asp
It did allow the trumpet stack thingys to be fitted which help intake a bit.
If I had time again I would fabricate the bottom and sides of the box myself, run a soft rubber seal around the top and then use the bonnet as the
top, at the mo I had to cut a BIG hole in the bonnet but I'm not bothered what it looks like.
For the intake, keep it straight and short as possible with the intake either in the nose or use a naca duct. If you simply cut a hole in the side of
the body the air will not enter well at speed.
The air filter on mine is a cone in the mouth of the box.
If you fit a box, plumb the float chamber breathers into the box too, this equalises the fuel and air pressure at speeds if you get a ram air effect
and so stops lean burn.
As my engine is not on rubber mounts I also filled as much of the manifold orifice as poss by cutting cardboard templates top and bottom, and then
using Al sheet. This helped!
Hope I'm not teaching granny to suck here but all the above really quietened mine noticably, though I haven't got the meter on it yet.
Or just go to Llandow, they couldn't care less how noisy you are!
I also had a thought the other day that pointing the end pipe straight up may reduce reduce the noise hitting the meter, downwards it just bounces off
the road.
Lastly I repacked my exhaust wadding a bit softer, if it is too hard packed its noisier.

Thanks for that. My carbs actually stick out the top of the bonnet, so can't use the bonnet to seal it. I could make a bulge to seal it i
suppose, but this would be a lot easier.
So whose the cheapest place to buy this from?

The cheapest I think is MNR, details on their site. But you have to send a cheque. They may have a base plate for your engine.
Yup, it is expensive, but with it sticking out throught the bonnet other cars quake in their boots!

LOL, point taken, luckily it was only an evening one (£99) and after been booted off after 2 laps, i stuck a pizza box over the intake (chav scooby
scoop) and just let off everytime i went past the sound meter. Unfortunetly i didn't realise there we 3 other meters they can turn on and listen
to you if you are suspected to be easing off past the main meter. Anyway, the noise man laughed at my pizza scoop and let me stay on there until 8pm,
so only missed 30 minutes

That almost beats my trackside discarded slick cut up as oil filler bung, and hose pipe to change gear when the cable snapped.
Unfortunately the prop shaft UJ then broke and even seaweed and snot couldn't cure that one.
Not a good day Saturday!

LOL, its amazing what you can cobble together when you need to!!!!!! When i failed at comb, i got hold of a muffler, but had to change the exit of the
tailpipe, this involved redrilling the stainless can with a flat battery drill and blunt drill bit, but as i knew the can was going in the bin when i
got home, a trusty hammer and self tapper happily pieced the stainless can to hold the pipe on, LOL!!
Can't believe that all happened to you in one day!!!!

Looks good. Just thinking about noise, is it the actuall sucking noise or the noise from the carbs that cause the issue. Surely insulating the airbox
or making it from a sound deading material like plastic, rather than aluminium for example would maki ut quieter?

It's about time that you bought yourself a new MNR. Apparently there's one within about 4 miles of your home address. I (errr, I mean
the owner) could then go and join MK9R as a newbie in RGB.

i didn't get good results with the pipercross airbox.
fitted it to a carb'ed blade and got it on the rolling road where it was running very rich even after dropping down to 128 main jets.
the filter in the end of it is tiny and very restrictive

Now, who are you going to listen to? The voices in your head, or those, so called, 'professionals?'
