I'm on holliday in Holland , and I am worried I may have a major problem............
Yesterday I had a bit of noise from the front right wheel in slow corners , so I checked when I got set up at a campsite , and there was a lot of play
in the hub . And I mean A LOT !
I took the wheel off and adjusted the bearing , all seemed fine - no rumbling while spinning the wheel , all the play gone in just a quater turn of
the nut (Escort upright/hub setup)
But......today I nipped to the shop for food (and alcahol......) , and there is a ton of nasty noise from that same wheel while turning
left..........it sounds like there is metal to metal contact somewhere ?
Is the bearing likely to collapse on the way home.......or shouild I be hunting around Holland for a Mk 2 Escort wheel bearing kit
Think I would sort ASAP , I've seen a stub axle sheared due to a faulty bearing
Afraid it Does sound as though it needs further investigation
Is the car pulling to one side at all ?
Any abnormal Heat in the centre of the roadwheel ?
Jack the car up and rotate the wheel by hand, check for any grating or unusual noise
When you adjusted the per-load on the bearing did you back the nut off slightly afterwards ?
What they said ^^^
Take the hub off and have a proper look. My money would be on a bearing cage breaking up.
So......this could be a problem......if I take it apart and find it's dead , I then cant go looking for a replacement
Is there a Dutch equivalent to the back-street motor factors that we in England rely on so much ? I'll be needing a front wheel bearing kit for a
Mk2 Escort , 1978 vintage..................
I'm near Apeldoorn if that helps...................
i you struggle, get one posted from the uk
Hi,
You could try Brezan. It's a chain of car material shops that sells all kinds of car parts. They should be able to track your part.
There's one in Apeldoorn on the Europaweg 180. Phone 055 541 0110 (or +31 55 541 0110 from a foreign phone. Email is apeldoorn@brezan.nl
Or you could try Speedon, a dutch kitcar company. Sells and builds kit cars and supplies parts. Very active in the Dutch Kitcar Club and very friendly
people. They are in Ede which is about 45 mins from Apeldoorn. Adress is Fultonstaat 1 in Ede, telephone is 0318-690122 (best between 15.00 and 19.00
hours) and email is info@speedon.nl
Hope this helps.

if you're stuck there are a couple of dutch locosters who may be able to help. Irvined has a fury near amsterdam. May not be local but he may know of the part / phrase you need0o utter otherwise i'm sure burton will post you something if you give them an arm and leg.
I found this link on this site by doing a search
could be usefull for Claire ?
Quenton Hazell lists the following
Mk1 escorts QWB113c except mexico and rs2000 which are Qwb 114c
MK2 escorts are QWB115c except rs2000 which are QWB114c
Cortina MK3 4 and 5 are QWB115c
Capris are all QWB114c except the 3ltr v6 from 11/71 to 8/81 these are QWB416.
This doesn't help you with sizes but it's a start with the info you might need.
Someone else may know if the hubs are the same throughout the range and only the bearings are different.
I"ve been and bought a bearing - Brezan had it in stock ( ! ) , so it's now in bits............and now the bad bit.......
It's not the bearing thats dead - its the hub The bearing has been spinning in the ally hub , which is now badly worn . The noise was the
disc rubbing on the calliper bolts since the hub is now sitting about 1mm closer to the upright .
The only roadside fix I can try now is Locktight - just waiting for a very nice Dutch chap to finish his breakfast , then nip me to Brezan (just 5
minuts up the road.....) , and see what they have .
Bearing fit Locktight , and 2 M12 washers needed !
LocTite do a specific bearing fixative (or used to) that should help. I've had it hold for a long time when I thought the bearing had no chance. You just have to gve it time to cure before using/loading.
The guys at Brezen didnt think that liquid metal would do the job..........so we have been all over Apeldoorn , first to a bearing shop to find an
over-size bearing (no luck) , he said Locktight wouldnt work as it only fills a 1/2mm gap (and the hub is more worn than that )
So next to a motor re-conditioners - to see if they could machine the hub and fit an insert - and they couldnt (wouldnt....) do it .
Unfortunatly they wouldnt let me show them how its done
So................back to Brezen for liquid metal and brake cleaner...................I'm typing this as it sets , just hoping it holds untill I
get home !
Just added a reply on the sylva list...
The guys at speedon (see contact details a few posts up) might / will probably have a replacement upright on the shelf.
No chance of getting a replacement upright? Must be able too?
I feel your pain, being abroad with these issues is 10 times worst!
Could I suggest a buying AA european cover and then a relaxing day or two doing nothing to make sure the cover has started. Call them and get a lift home?

I take it that there are no car breakers around, and got any old escorts around ?
Itīs not quite near but maybe worth a try: Fury Sportscars, a Fisher Fury dealer. Also builds and rebuilds kits and probably has a lot of spares lying
around. Heīs about 1,5 hour north of Apeldoorn.
Owner is Harm Boerma. Adress is Hoofdweg 2, 8424PL Elsloo. Telephone: 06-55545523. Email: furysportscars@home.nl

A bodge that I was taught years ago when bearings were loose in the hub was to go round the inside bore of the hub with a hammer and center punch to raise the surface to grip the bearings a bit better, as said it is a bodge but it works . Together with a bit of Loctite it should get you home .
Wot Rusty Nuts says ^^^
Seen this done and it did work, NOT ideal i know but if your up sh*t creek without a padle...
Just take it steady and hopefully all will be well
100 miles later ......And its back to not being fixed
If you're still stuck by then I'm coming to Utrecht on Sunday and could bring parts.
D
You should contact IrvineD. He's got a nice workshop in Utrecht, car lift, Fury etc. It would be a stroke of luck if he had a spare hub.
Great guy, big and strong, a bit elusive though.. seems to have more money and holidays than most of us.
D
Get the center punch out,
how much has it worn? is it 1mm all round? wondering if a strip of 1mm thick steel wrapped around the bearing and then pressed in might take up the
gap before toctite etc.
what happened to the epoxy/chemical metal stuff you put in? did it just break up?
any other cars share the same hubs? or any others that would work?
edit, er worried now, do you have to use bearing loctite whenever you put bearings into any aluminium hubs?

I feel a locostbuilders challenge coming on. I'll try and contact IrvineD - he's got plenty of friends in Utrech, and one of them must have
a lathe or know someone who does.
But as Dave says ......... he does have more holidays than the rest of us put together!
I'm in utrecht, and have a few spare bearings, i think i got rid of my spare hubs, but im sure i can help you find stuff if you need it.
BTW I think I passed you the other day on the way back from Belgium.
OK outside of the box really but needs must. If you were to get a roll of kitchen foil and fold it till it was a bit thicker then wrap it round the
bearing with a bit of overlap to the inside ( so it pulls the foil in as you press the race in.)
Unorthodox but maybe just maybe enough to get you going.
cant you find a place that will weld it up then re-machine it. should be a pretty easy job and will be plenty god enough to get you home. if rally design or hi-spec etc etc stock them i can go pick one up for you and send it next day delivery as i live in-between the two.
Claire - I'll u2u you david's phone number (bloke a couple of posts above).
Good luck.
Could you get the hub machined out and a steel insert made (assuming enough material in the hub)? In the spirit of locost and using whatever is to
hand, I might be tempted to shim out the bearing with a bit of chopped up coke can + bearing fit. IME the bearing glue works very well as long as you
don't need much thickness.
FWIW, many years ago I went on a euro road trip with a friend in his 2.8i Capri. After a couple of hours cruising are rather high speeds down through
France we slowed down to take and exit of the autoroute and suddenly realised the loud droning noise wasn't the engine! Both front bearings had
become very loose, and we ended up stripping them down in the campsite and begged some grease of a backstreet garage to repack the bearings with.
Still a bit noisy afterwards, but they did a further 3000 miles without getting any worse.
Claire
I have u2u 'd you with a couple of "holland car clubs websites that are in english,
I would hope that one of them will have club members that are local, and possibly have a lathe
Also by doing a search on here, Major is in Maasslus , and that appears to be closeish to you
regards
Steve

Hang on, I just remembered I have a brand new pair of Escort alloy hubs and bearings that I've not yet fitted to my Striker; if you have an address I could get them posted tommorow?

Well , I made it Dunkerque without any major problems - cruising behind trucks on the motorway sure does keep
the speed down....but I did at least break the 40mpg barrier !
Currently sitting outside a McDonald's pinching free wi fi , only just realized you don't have to go inside
Hmm I've had a busy week and seem to have missed this thread. As I might have been able to help out. Although not quite local to Apeldoorn, I
work in Meppel, about 70km north. And we do have some fairly large lathes there, which we are free to use in our spare time. Iow lunch breaks and for
about 2 hours after work till they lock up.
Really hope you get home save Clair. Never pleasant to get stranded, but much worse so abroad.
Sorry to read this now.
i,m not so often any more on his forum.
but you made the trip back home.
We had the parts in stock.
If some else need assistant on a trip in Holland just give us e a call.
