Water cooler speculation / PPC £999 challenge

Okay, here we go- fantasy £999 challenge car time.

(for the un-initiated, you have to buy or build a car for less than £999 then do two races- one drag race, one slalom). The car has to be road legal and with a current MOT.... So no Go-kart / LS7 combos

What would you build???

I'm thinking something cheap and aerodynamic then wacking a big powerful cheap engine in it....

For me- its a Triumph TR7 with a 200SX engine (240Bhp easy) in it (not sure how wide the engine is though...).... Then again, although slippery the TR7 is built from pig iron- 1000kg!!!

Back to the Triumph Herald with 200SX engine 725kg even if it's not very aerodynamic.... and you'ld get a pretty grotty one for £400!!!!

Ka RS Turbo. Handles well, light, and 130bhp of turbo grunt in an engine lighter than the one previously in there!

MG Midgets are suprisingly expensive!! Category 3 nut-case renovation job is £600......

then again, Triumph TR7s are beginning to get good money too!!!

Yup- I wondered about nitrous.... Not cheap if used routinely, but for drag racing it's wicked stuff.... and the car should handle well- maybe a lowering kit would help for the slalom (or super stiff shocks)...

I suppose a stripped out bog standard 205 wouldn't be very costly.....

Just seen this on the bay of E....

currently £686 with 11 hours to run - methinks the seller will refuse to sell for that even though he has set no reserve!

But here is a nice littl contender - and not the 'norm'

Yes I think an error on the listing might appear within the next few hours causing the auction to be removed....

Really annoying- it is after all a legal offer....

£500 plus some effort, £100 for some lexan windows, £399 left for brakes and suspension

Yes midgets are getting silly money these days, though not as mad money as mini's are now making these days - otherwise it would have to be a mini with an XE.

Fiat 126 with vauxhall XE16v turbo engine and fwd box transverse in the boot, under 600kg and 350+ hp with an appropriate chip.

Mate with a sub £500 lightly modified LET engine in a £70 RWD opel kadett shell is running 12.1 1/4 miles with it at the mo.

I paid £62 for a pair of rot free fiats, still got one spare!

Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion retro car restoration and tuning

What about a £500 s/h grasstracker with £499 spent on lights handbrake calipers, and industrial quantities of edge trim. SVA fee shouldn't be included in the price IMO.

i've got a redundant Nova chav mobile sitting on my drive left by one of my boys. So that's £0 spent and £999 left to tune.

May be a V6 on a sub frame in the back with some suspension work

or a 2ltr Vauhall engine in the front

but £0 spent on making it look good it must look like a wreck

Just might do it for fun if SWMBO will allow

For £999 you could put an engine in the back and the front at the same time

Not sure the handling would be so nice though on the slalom!!!

Obviously you wouldn't be able to have a kickin bass tube in the back if you did

My old corolla GTi has been practically abandoned by the current owner.

Doesn't sound promising at first but I did fit a an MR2 2.0L turbo in the front with some decent dampers, springs and roll bars. I think it even had a new wiring loom and OMEX ECU last time I looked. Needed some big end bearings which is way its been neglected but easy to sort.

To win the quarter mile you'll need a lot of power, light weight will help but it's power that'll win. Obviously light weight, decent handling and progressive power delivery are needed for slalom.

*E34 540i auto (£500 less if unloved and ratty looking)
*Gutted and agressively lightened with holesaw (-£ for leather and bits)
*Composite bonnet, boot, bumpers (cheap DIY especially as it doesn't have to look perfect)
*low ratio M535 LSD
*+200bhp NOS
*Lower it by moving platforms or cutting springs
*Bigger fabricated anti-roll bars

A similar plan with a big Jap V8 or inline6 barge would work just as well.
