Am I thick? How does this scam work
watched 'The Real Hustle' on BBC3 last night, a scam on there involved the pretty girl going into a shop. The shop has one of those
standalone cash machines.
Aparantly they have a PIN code to allow you to alter menu settings, one they showed last night was to swap over the directory path for the £10 tray
and £20 tray, so when she then asked it for a tenner, out spat a £20. Free money.
But here's where I don't get it, they then asked the cash machine for £100 and she gets £200.
But does she? If you ask for £100 from an ATM then most of its in £20's yes? So theres a good posibility they only got given £50, ie they lost
money.
Or did I miss something? (purely out of interest, I'm not going to the Spa shop later..... honest)

agree - I find that most cash machine tend to give out the majority in £ 20 and the last 10 or 20 as £ 10 notes.
only explanation is thqat maybe the standalone ones use all £ 10 but then why have a £ 20 tray.
seems wrong and I am too fyk to work it out, Mr Whippy will know the answer for sure.

It's easy. They ran out of genuine scams a long time ago and have long since been making them up. Clearly they didn't think this one
through enough.

as a fraud investigator of around 10 years now i would quite happily go on the record as saying 90% of what that program shows is absolute tosh!! Yes
some of the scams may work in theory but just simply don't happen in the real world.

perhaps if they can swap the directory for the tray they're probably aware of how to tell the machine that the £20's are empty so it only
pays out in £10's (£20's).

I think more likely they just didn't think it through. Once a bank realised that something like that had happened they would simply contact all
people who had withdrawn money and ask for the difference back. Those who chose not to refund the money could in theory be reported to police for
"retaining a wrongful credit".
