Im new to the BEC car sceen as such and have a question about gear changes.

I know you use the clucth to pull of and after that if the revs are high enough you can just select the next gear. But what about down shifting, is the clutch used to come down the gears?

Stupid question i know but my brother in law who is a bike nut is telling me that ill have to use the clutch to downshift.

Excuse my lack of knowledge this is new to me

i believe you can downshift without the clutch
but it tend to use it.

its strange enough getting used to keeping your left foot out of the way on upshifts

Upshift, back off the gas and tug back, downshift use clutch to be safe, some people load the throttle and downshift, this is what quickshifters do but they are more precise than size 10's.

So you can but risk crashing the gears... not prefered IMHO.

as above unless you fit one of these flatshifter, have one on mine they're magic

I am not a BEC driver but I do ride bikes. A small amout on pressure on the gearlever and the slightest dab of revs should see it downshift. Most however probably prefer the smallest dab of clutch on downshifts. Avoiding heavy use of the gearbox to slow down (as you do on a bike) has also been mentioned.

The Flatshifter looks a great bit of kit.

This will be one of my first modifications i think.

Im sure ill get used to the gearchange when i collect the car. I have 150 miles trip home to get used to it

Flat shifter with downshift option installed on ZX9 BEC, only been able to use once since fitting it.
Are the downshifts as smooth as the upshift ? - not sure if mines set up right and not having any experience of one, its difficult to decide whether to start fiddling !
