Cap Head Bolts
myke pocock - 4/5/10 at 08:36 PM

I am having trouble sourcing some Cap Head (Allen head) bolts of M10 x 1 x 25 in 10.9 or 12.9 They need to have about 12mm of plain shank before the thread so could be longer so I can cut them down. I am looking for 10 off via post as my local supplier doesnt do 1mm pitch. I have been quoted £35 plus for 10 by post, a bit savage. I need them to secure a crown wheel to a diff unit and will wire them for security. Any ideas. I have tried Namric, Bolt and Nut Services and Thomas Smith Fastners amongst a few.

There are iso standard thread diagrams on the web (i.e. what you will normally get if you by a cap-head bolt), worth a look to see what size of bolt you could cut down..

If not 35Quid for a one HT off bolts is probably good value....

Are you sure you need the shoulder? Bolts clamp and are not used pivots so a set screw might be suitable??

I paid £40 for my set of special propshaft bolts (M10x1x50) from my local fastenings place. You really dont want to know how much list price was on them....I get trade discount...

Getting them in 8.8 grade is easy, its when you want 12.9 cap heads the price goes up as they are made to order.

You dont need any plain shank if they are prop bolts BTW.

do they have to cap head bolts?
if they're for the crownwheel to diff bolts, on the atlas they are the hex head bolt (the type with a flange on the head) they're £2.30 each or something from gartrac?

£35 isn't too bad. When I wanted UNF cap heads as per this thread, the only firm that I found that could do exactly what I needed wanted to charge me £15+VAT EACH!

Not a great idea when I needed 22 of them!
