Don't rule out laptops without serial ports. I have just bought a USB to serial lead from Maplin (reduced to £14 something), specifically because others had said that that particular one worked with Megasquirt. I tried it yesterday and indeed it seems fine - two different previous types didn't.

But also be aware Vista doesnt like serial adapters and thats a hole new world of arse ache.

I have a serial adapter that works with all the ecu's and computors ive tried it on except them with vista.

You can buy an exress card / serial adapter that is said to work.

That said I bought an old p4 desk top on ebay for £20 odd quid and nailed it to the wall. It does all my car stuff and and also streams music and tv to the garage so I can get the Gp on whilst playing

I have a really old thinkpad, its fine for MS and it will run from the little cars battery although this provides less volts than it used to.

No need for anything fancy

I have a couple of old machines kicking around at home - If one suits you can have it for the cost of the postage.

Serial 9pin to USB lead £2.50ish from good old eBay. That includes postage from a uk seller
