My 01 citroen synergie cost under a grand.
Have just done 720 miles on a single tank of biodiesel. Fully laden.
Not remotely desirable but seats 7 no bother, has sliding side doors. (once you've had them etc.) and the hdi engine pulls smooth from 1200rpm.
Not as cool as a 4wd, but does more things well and you don't have to maintain whirly 4x4 bits that you don't actually use.
