like the type you would find in a biro,1 1/4" long and 1/4" diameter,anyone got one kicking around or know where i might find such an animal?

I have a 40mm x 6mm if any good?

The inside bore is 1/4" not sure if thats what you meant, you may need to stretch and cut down if you need it sprung.

Compression or expansion ?

expansion,it,s like you would find in a biro,ie very fine wire,length is not important as i can stretch/chop it.
it fits into the DI (coil pack) on my SAAB and touches the top of the spark plugs

isnt there a local diy shop near you? be much cheaper

I had this problem on my Nissan and I used the spring from inside a Biro

Think you mean a compression spring John? like a small valve spring
