as above, had a look on ebay to no avail... anyone know of an alternative?

i have got one that i chopped and joined to make it 40mm shorter

Dingz - 23/2/11 at 02:01 PM

Why did you make it shorter?

Daddylonglegs - 23/2/11 at 02:07 PM

Probably because he shortened the sump?

I think Burtons might sell them - I needed one a while back and sure I saw them on there (I managed to get one from a friend so didn't need to buy in the end!).

they only list cossie 2wd ones - but they might not be far off (would need adjusted to suit the pinto sump I guess)

Aren't they the same?

I had a pinto with a normal sump and fitted the RS2000 alloy sump and that was the same?

don't know about the dipstick / tube - but the cossie 2wd sump is different

Generally the oil level is the same for any Pinto sump.
i.e. The upper level is relative to the block , sump capacity for the different sumps should give a similar max level.
What you should do is fill the sump with the correct amount of oil and mark the dip stick or cut down the tube.
if you shorten the sump you should add capacity to the sides to make up the volume.

I see, raise the oil level so the crank runs in it and beats it into a nice froth!

RichardK - 24/2/11 at 08:23 AM

I've got a spare one too if you still need one.

Cheers

It doesn't matter what you do to the sump, the max oil level stays the same, ie x Cm below the crank. So the max level on the dipstick is still correct.

thats right, but my comment about the cossie one being different was because both the oil capacity and the sump are different in that case (so you couldn't count on them being the same as pinto's without checking)

there is one other reason why the level mark might not be right (on any engine) if the engine sits at a different angle in your car to the one it came out of
most sierra engines sit with the nose slightly higher than the tail - allot of se7ens are the other way round
thats why its always best to calibrate the dipstick when the engines not in its original vehicle

it had to be shortened as it wouldn't go all the way in. i chopped the sump and winged it then made new marks for max and min.

But if the dipstick was from that engine then the high mark must be at the same level, even if you have to shorten it? As already said, the high mark is a point below the crank, not a point above the bottom of the sump. I sit to be corrected (backs killing me at the moment)
