WTD: 50 mm of 10 mm aluminium alloy rod
02GF74 - 26/4/11 at 10:11 AM

As per title, I'm looking for a short length, 50 mm (not more than 100 mm) of 10 mm diameter aluminium rod.

Engineerng grade (e.g. 606 ot 6082) so not the raw aluminium stuff that is sold in B&Q.

I don't any 10mm, but might have some 1/2" or 3/8" in 6082 but I'd need to check

or these guys are selling 1/2" at £1.70 / foot (and they'll probably be at stoneleigh again)

thanks for the offer but steel or stainless I can get by cutting down a couple of long M10 bolts..... (it is the potential weight saving I am after - don't ask; unless you have it in Ti!! )

found a bit of 7/16" alloy which I think is 6082 / HE30

that works out as 11.1mm - any good to you ?

thanks for looking but that is just a touch too big.

Theres a bit of 6060 on ALUMINIUM ROUND BAR / ROD - 10mm DIA x 300mm LONG NEW | eBay UK for a whole £2.00?

mcerd1 - 28/4/11 at 12:02 PM

well the next best I've got is 7.9mm (5/16" )

what is it your making / could you not turn down a bigger bar ?

I want to make longer cylinder nuts (not sure what the correct term is) as seen centre bottom in the pickcha below.

The front one is too short so is fouling my saddle (saddle has central cut out). My reckoning is that by uisng a longer piece of rod, the saddle will rest on the rod rather than have the rod rip the saddle side through the hole, well, that is the plan.

Hence the aluminium alloy to save a bit of weiht (I don't have lathe). .... and yes, I would test the cylinder nut to see if it is likely the threads will fail - so a slightly bigger diamter rod 9.5 mm vs 9.0 m (currently) would help. It may be that an even larger diameter, 10 or 11 mm would still fit but the clamp I am not sure about that.

Plan B is to glue some rubber over the cylinder nut.

they're called barrel nuts

did you get something sorted ?

or if you can do a drawing one of us could make them for a couple of beer tokens....
