XR3i alternator bracket/mount
slingshot2000 - 7/8/11 at 10:00 PM

I am hoping that the collective "Locost Wisdom" can help me here.

16 years ago I dumped an 1800 Zetec into a MK2 Escort on a student budget (ie: for nowt). I robbed and borrowed everything, but was not sensible to keep notes. The guy that sorted the Ford ECU for me asked why I had used and butchered the CrossFlow alternator bracket/mount. Ther next time I saw him he gave me a bracket/mount that bolted straight onto the Zetec block.

This was 16/17 years ago, but I am sure that he said it was off an XR3i. Would anybody know if the very late XR3i's had Zetec motors , or could it have been from a very late CVH engined XR3i, and happened to fit a Zetec mounting holes ????

Lots of people seem to be looking for a solution to this, hence I think this is worth following up

This guy had worked in the parts department of a Ford Main Stealer and was a fountain of knowledge. I have looked for him on every Ford associated forum/site thet I think relevant, as I am sure plenty here could use his help.

Regards
Jon

The Escort XR3i and Orion Si both ran the 130ps version of the 1.8l "silvertop" Zetec engine.
I can't tell you what Mk bodies they were in, I can just confirm that they exist, 'cos the one in out car is an Orion Si one

XR3i's were 1.6 CVH in the mk3 and mk4, then 1.8 Zetec in the mk5 and mk6. The mk5 is the more popular of the Zetec types as it was the 130ps variant of the engine.

XR3's (without the i) were the first ones, only in mk3. They had a CVH on a Weber DFT (a desirable part on it's own) but no fuel injection, hence the lack of i in the name. The very last had 5 speed boxes too, which is the one I have. I was once told that there were only 200 in that spec, but I don't know if that's true.

Anyway, I digress.

The XR3 and XR3i brackets are very different, as is the XR2 one from the same era. They all bolt up to the Zetec but put the alternator in different places. Keep in mind that I'm referring to a CVH alternator here - I'd doubt that the original zetec alternator fits the CVH mount. You also need to swap the pulley over as the zetec uses a ribbed belt as opposed to a v belt on the CVH.

I've probably got one of each somewhere in the garage, but it would be handy to know which of the three variants you actually need!

Thats cvh not zetec.

Will your chassis give you that sort of clearance ?

It wouldnt in a locost.

Good point Warren, it is a Westfield chassis. I will need to measure it.

Difficult to tell as it's black on a dark background, but I'd say that's XR3. I've got one somewhere... Would take a bit of 'finding'.

Thanks for the effort guys. I have been told this is what I need, but it may require a little alteration, depending on engine mounts;

If this will fit I should be ok as I have not made/sourced engine mounts as yet.

Thanks
Jon
