I'm going to replace my Boxford training lathe with a Colchester Student 'cos I need the bigger swing and the thread cutting but how much should I pay? There seems to be a huge disparity in prices between conventional machinery auction houses and ebay ('bay is cheaper).

I wonder why? Surely it can't be that just the rubbish is on the 'bay?

£400 would be the limit for me. the difference is that the companies want to turn a profit and have all the lifting and delivery gear to make the sale easy. people flogging them on eBay usually just want rid don't have lifting or delivery facility. at the end of the day as long as the bed isn't worn out then you can fix anything else that is worn. even worst case scenario you could strip it completely and have the bed reground

If it is a later 600 group one, with some tooling, chucks etc, single phase, good order expect to pay at least £1500!!

If it is an old round headstock type, ie very old, but in good order as above £6 -700 should do it.

i had three harrison l5a's and a colchester student. i struggled to get more than £400 for any of them and all were in really good condition.

the problem is you can advertise them for any number you feel like. getting someone that is good on their word that turns up with the correct vehicle and cash in hand is the hard part as i painfully found out.

The L5A's are quite old and you do not say how old the student was.

V8KID, what are you actually looking for? Everything depends on age and condition, and we are comparing apples and pears here!

A friend of mine bought a Student for £600 from a place he was working which was closing down. He spent £1000 wiring it in his workshop via a converter. You'd struggle to get an old Myford for £400.

Anything under £1k all in would do although I'd prefer DRO fitted. Also as I only have single phase I'd need to cost a phase converter in that price.

Main reason for a student is to get a decent swing I'd like to turn stuff around 11.25" dia.

You should be able to buy a cracking lathe for your budget without a dro. I do not think a dro is all that essential for a lathe you only need to think in 2 dimensions.

I got a nearly new Harrison M250 CNC lathe from Ebay for £700 a few years back. I have seen several since.
