1/8" welding rod? Executive coat hanger? Mrs G's oven shelf?

Silver steel may fit your bill. It's not stainless but is accuratley ground to diameter and thus has a very good finish which could be protected with laquer, it also comes in 330mm lengths and is obtainable from good tool suppliers or the likes of RS Components or Axminster power tool centre.
A word of warning, this is carbon tool steel and as such can be tempered to suit it's application, rapid quencing after welding will make it brittle.

Try B&Q of all places! They sell all sorts of short lengths of bar stock, tube, flat bar/angle and extrusions!

A couple of welding rods any good?

Knock the flux off and polish up with a bit of wet & dry.
