Diesel......... the countries gone mad ?

Hellfire - 13/9/05 at 07:23 PM

I have one gallon to spare Jon - should last you at least 50 miles in your GT2

john_p_b - 13/9/05 at 07:31 PM

i'm wondering how long it will be before we see ppl advertising a gallon of fuel on sale forums or ebay!

i wonder how much longer it will be before the mad max films come true

wilkingj - 13/9/05 at 07:34 PM

I am seriously considering making my own diesel... I am passing the £150 per month now.

The world is going MAD.. and I am having treatment to stop going there myself

JoelP - 13/9/05 at 07:41 PM

i found a queueless garage today, i think people are calming down a bit there will, apparently, be no blockades anyway.

tadltd - 13/9/05 at 07:43 PM

Vegetable Oil - a good substitute for diesel and a fraction of the cost.

I kid you not.

but you still have to declare it and pay tax on it don't you?

tadltd - 13/9/05 at 08:00 PM

My understanding is you don't HAVE to declare it, but if you do then you will have to pay tax...

kipper - 13/9/05 at 08:24 PM

How many bee's would I need to get a gallon of bee pee.........
Just a thought

john_p_b - 13/9/05 at 08:50 PM

.............oh dear

JoelP - 13/9/05 at 08:54 PM

what do you have to add to veggie oil to help it along? Or is it ok neat?

has anyone declared usage of any dutyfree fuel, and how much ball ache is it to prove the amounts etc? (or more to the point, how easy to blag them?!)

Most of the garages round Reading were pretty queue-free all day.

Just been out for a blast in the Fury.

All Shell Stations either have no petrol left or have queues off the forecourt....
Asda has a queue 5 cars deep....

nah! - seems the panic is still there!

Stephen

PS just under 50litres safely stored in Fury fuel tank (filled up a week ago) and an almost full tin-tip (also filled up a week ago)

steve_gus - 13/9/05 at 09:30 PM

whatever people say about veggie fuel, I dont think im gonna risk putting it in my 15 month old car. The money saved wont add up to possible damage caused by the experiment.

aye, but im thinking my '96 van, which is on its last legs anyway, might benefit from some!

Triton - 13/9/05 at 09:58 PM

I saw a dye for red to white diesel on ebay..........

JoelP - 13/9/05 at 10:03 PM

that would be useless anyway!

tadltd - 13/9/05 at 10:10 PM

Don't need to add anything to it. Doesn't cause damage either. A quick search on tinternet will confirm...

VinceGledhill - 13/9/05 at 10:23 PM

Works a treat. Its just getting it into the tank from the 5 gallon catering size containers that's the problem.

Oh.... and your exhaust smelling like Harry Ramsdens.

If they dip your tank and you have veg oil or biodiesel in it and are not registered to use it and pay 27p per litre on it......You are done! They can take your vehicle. They can also test instantly for red which has been turned into clear......done again!
Alex

James - 13/9/05 at 10:33 PM

Do they dip test all cars that are pulled over... or only those that have diesel badges?

Cheers,
James

indykid - 13/9/05 at 11:53 PM

only those that smell like chip shops

from my research following the biodiesel thread a while back, if you want to run straight veg oil (SVO) you need to pre heat it, as it's too thick in its raw form

tom

tadltd - 14/9/05 at 12:45 AM

Not strictly true - only if you want it to start and run more easily in the morning!

Dale - 14/9/05 at 01:04 AM

do a google on freedom fuels ? lots of stuff on bio diesel. But I supose then they will start taxing soybean oil.
Dale

VinceGledhill - 14/9/05 at 06:51 AM

If I was driving my own Taxi for a living I would consider it.

I've got a deisel car and have for the past 10 years or so. I've been pulled many times but have never once had my fuel "dipped"

Get yourself down to Makro for the vegie oil don't forget to get a big funnel whilst you're there.

Coose - 14/9/05 at 07:57 AM

It didn't take long....

marktigere1 - 14/9/05 at 08:19 AM

If you have a Lucas injection pump on your diesel engine then running straight veg with no preheat will shag it big time. Well documented etc. etc.

If you have the Bosch or equivalent you can get away with it although some form of pre heat still makes it easier to use.

All info you need is here: http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751

I run Biodiesel with no mods but my ip pump is Bosch so I could run veg if the chips were down

Cheers

Mark

indykid - 14/9/05 at 09:03 AM

boom boom

tom

tadltd - 14/9/05 at 09:52 AM

I heard that one of the risks associated with veg oil is that you might FRY your clutch...!

marktigere1 - 14/9/05 at 09:59 AM

Think I'll chew the fat on some of these replies

Then veg out for the rest of the day

Mark

PS. Here we go...........

NS Dev - 14/9/05 at 12:25 PM

I have posted about this before.........

you can run diesels on heating oil with no bother. You must add a small % of engine oil to it to keep the injection pump lubed correctly (think around 2% but can look this up)

Heating oil is not dyed.

Do they do a full chemistry check or is the test just colour based? i.e. would heating oil pass. I heard about an oil distributor running their tankers on it but the ministry actually had to film them filling up to get them.

Anyhow, just drive a £250 sierra diesel and run it on heating oil. If they catch you, they can crush the car!!!! Buy another one.

Alternative for petrols is LPG conversion, followed by a bulk lpg tank in the garden and using that for your central heating. Just add a takeoff to the pipe to fill the car's tank as well! I know of somebody doing this very nicely. Used to use propane cylinders but the bulk tank was much more convenient!

marktigere1 - 14/9/05 at 01:47 PM

Looks like a solvent thats supposed to thin veg oil.

Been tried in this country with a whole load of stuffed ip pumps to prove the stuff is total crap.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Biodiesel takes the free fatty acids out of veg to make it thinner. This looks well dodgy to me.

Still, you pays yer money.......

Mark

PS. Using white spirit as shown on Top Gear is illegal apparently.

PPS. Go here http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751 and search for Dieselsecret to see what people think.

http://www.dieselveg.com/conversion%20info.htm

offer conversion to run your car on veg oil.

Peteff - 14/9/05 at 09:40 PM

The Top Gear test ran a Mercedes diesel on vegetable oil with white spirit added. It was conducted by the AA and was said to run better than on pump diesel.

clbarclay - 17/9/05 at 04:46 PM

For those of you that use petrol (not too many diesel sports cars about) you can always goe the brazilian way and run cars on 50% or more ethanol mixed in with the pertrol. Not sure of any side effects on engines but the brazlians have been doing it for quite some time know.

Any body thinking of taking the die out of red diesel, don't bother. Theres more to it than colour (other additives). you might as well use it straught and pray you don't get caught or just pay the road tax on it (so it costs the same).

To legal run home grown/made fuels IIRC you can down load the forms online fill them in and post them off with a check to pay for the road tax.

JoelP - 17/9/05 at 06:05 PM

if you did that you'd only save 30%, probably not worth the risk of using shady fuels! If you follow those links theres a tale from one guy who blew $3k on a new fuel system when crud built up and ruined it!
