Aluminium bolt
jolson - 6/4/06 at 08:08 PM

I'm looking for a single (yes, just one) aluminium bolt. It needs to be an M10 socket head cap, 1.5mm pitch, 40mm long.

I've had a good browse on the internet, but no luck. Anyone know where I can find such a beast?

One question...why does it have to be ali?

And M10 fine, you will be lucky!!

You will get one in stainless from an industrial fastenings supplier. You should have one fairly locally.

Aluminium seems a bit strange for a bolt....

Steel will be much easier.

1.5mm pitch is standard pitch for M10, 1.0 and 1.25 are the fine pitches.

It's for a bicycle part. I'm building my partner a new BMX racing bike so she can compete in the National Race Series this year. The stem uses a single bolt to pull a pair of wedges together. The makers have stuck in a dirty great steel one, where a smaller lighter bolt would have done the job equally well. An ali bolt will knock about 25 grams out of the weight, more if I drill it out.

I know 25 grams doesn't sound like much, but by paying attention to the details, the bike should be sub-17 lb.

The alternative is a stainless bolt, drilled out with a 7.5mm drill. I'm not as happy about doing that, but at least it's easy to find.

id go stainless, you dont want the handle bars coming off at speed.
theres hell of alot of strain in that area i would of thought

From what you describe - the bolt that secures the stem - presumably into the steerer tube?

Is this a good idea to replace it with an ally one? I'm not sure I'd be happy too.

There's a picture at the bottom of this page. The bolt just holds 2 wedges together. It's very lightly loaded.

I've built similar in the past and used a M6. M10 is just for show; if you tightened it up properly, you'd crush the handlebars and steerer tube.
