Escort steering rack.

Has any one got an old escort rack they dont want? .I have decided to have a go at shortening one to get rid of bump steer.Im not to bothered about condition as once i have sorted how to do it i will probably get a quick rack to modify.
Im in Northants so local to me would be ideal or can pick up from Newark on the Sunday.

i believe i have one, though its best if i post a picture to be sure. I *should* be at newark on whatever day the convoy ends up being on.

sounds like a good idea, I was thinkin the same!!

at Brands last week (smooth surface) the car was very stable but on the road(bumpy) it can be very nervous!

I believe MNR do shortened Escort racks.

Am I missing something here ?? My escort rack ends are only on the thread by about 5 or 6 turns to get the correct distance, how come you need one even shorter ???

its the knuckles that are too far apart, not the rod ends! If shortened in the middle, you would need extensions making for the ends.

that bits not in the book i believe, in fact bump steer isnt mentioned at all ISTR!

Peteff says his doesnt bump steer with an unshortened rack, mine certainly did though.

It is mentioned somewhere in the book but says it doesnt really matter as even production cars have some bump steer if I remember correctly.
Mine is ok on smooth roads but on the bumpy Northants roads it does affect it, Ive not really found it a problem but thought I would try and improve it , as I have just changed the rear dampers and found it made a massive improvement to general handling so now the bump steer is more noticable.
I have a lathe and mill so will turn down and rethread the rack end and cut a section out of the housing and sleeve the joint.
I looked at the mountings and think I can just put a plate between the existing mounting points and fit the shortened rack to that.
