Wanted: Water level sensor
nitram38 - 26/8/06 at 11:01 AM

Since my recent blown head gasket, I am after a sensor to put in my aluminium expansion bottle.
Welding a suitable boss is not a problem. All I need is a simple sensor that I can connect to a light on the dash.
K-series engines have a design flaw in that if you lose water, the engine temp sender shows as cooler!!!!!!!!!!
Recommendations of where to get one or have you got one for sale?

Can you use one from a wrecked car - washer bottle level sender? If so there should be plenty in the wreckers yards...

The BMW expansion tank I am going to use has one in..

I was hoping for a newish one. My local scrappy has everything on shelves, but not a clue what is what.
I do not want to buy one and find that it needs some sort of complicated electronic module to operate.
I just need a simple switch type.

Rover fitted one to the later zr ect can be bourght as a kit uses a warning light when coolent is low but that canbe changed for a buzzer ect

You mean this one ? link

Trouble is it is £89 + vat and p & p

look on the rimmer brothers site ...one of the modles listed must have had one...

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/rimmer/land-rover/range-rover/cool-heat#Expansion%20Tank

the alternative part listed is £20 but god knows how it works or is fitted????

The BMW one I have is a closed circuit when the water level is ok but open circuit when it is too low..

I think I can just rig up a relay to swith a warning light from this

I went to the breakers and no joy
What BMW did your bottle come from?

Might be worth having a look at some Citroens ie C15 van,and XMs amongst others . Should be cheap as they rarely go wrong . Well worth fitting to any car as temperature gauge problem isn't only on Rovers , applies to most cars as sender is normally at the top of the engine

Bottle is £21.20 pt RPCF000160
sensor is £7.80 pt RPCJ000040

Tried my local breakers.........no joy.
Rimmer brothers do not recognise the rover part numbers, but said they would look and ring me back. Still waiting.
Anyone know/recommend a decent rover part supplier?
I would prefer the rover bottle/sensor option.
