Hi All,
I have just bought a part built Sylva Striker off Dwyer, I now need a good engine.
The car will be used for track days and maybe auto testing, so it needs to be a car engine.
All my mates run Blade engines, so it would be nice to be able to keep up with them.
Cheers,
Andy
If you want to keep up with a blade then fit a blade engine!
There are power to weight issues with car engines V bike, unless you start using turbos/superchargers etc
Acceleration is generally better in a bec

Duratec? Its all aliminum so that gets rid of alot of the weight problems that CEC's have, and they are also good for well over 200bhp
zetec 1.6se, cheap, small, light (ally), revvy yamaha design head and can go to 170-200bhp on standard internals (+cams) relatively easily. just shell
out for the bellhousing and remember exhaust is on drivers side...
Ned.
What ned said as well the zetec-se engines are fantastic from what i hear

Hi
Nice to see somebody's looked up the reg's and figured out Bike and Car engines are often (not always) in different classes in the
motorsport world..
If you're going to prep it for Autotests, may well be worth keeping in mind the other grass roots bits too and keep it under 1.7L as that'll
give you lots of other places to play (e.g. road going classes at Sprints & hillclimbs) and would certainly help its resale value if you ever
wanted to move it on.
To add to the one Ned points out above, could i mention the Toyota 4a-ge?
Perhaps not quite as tuneable as the zetec, but quite cheap to get to 160ish and it's the engine that Raw (Striker's current builder)
focuses on.
What is your budget? How able are you to fabricate/plumb/wire bits for yourself (ie do you need off the shelf parts?)? Are you going for an SVA?
All,
Thanks for the replies, keep them coming. I like the 4age, but it's about 3k from Raw.
The zetec 1.6se sounds interesting what car is it from?
Cheers,
Andy

In which case I would say Duratec or Vauxhall red top. Both will give circa 200bhp with throttle bodies (or even carbs if no SVA). The XE is quite a bit heavier, but much cheaper and the exaust comes out the passenger side. Duratec would be lovely (and getting cheaper all the time) but could be more work to install.

well Im just converting a megablade to Saab turbo power, go on youtube and search for Maptun you'll see loads of saabs getting 3-400 BHP on a standard engine im after 300 BHP ( to start ) best of all is im using the standard injection/ecu/engine and it all mounts together using the VX to type 9 bellhouse
volvo 5 cyl , get the noise with it , exhaust on the right hand side .
2.5 20v 180 bhp out of the box, turbo / NA your choice .
To keep in a sensible buget Ford Zetec silver top 1600, 1800 or 2 litre. Very reliable very very cheap to aquire, only real cost is sorting out the induction side of things.
Thanks to all that replied to me I got some good advise, a special thanks Dave about the Volvos.
I've decided that I'm taking the bike engine route.
Thanks again all and have a good Christmas.
Cheers,
Andy
if you get a burton power catalogue, at the beginning they go through every ford engine , giving power and tuning figures.
might help

Well I'm back to a car engine again, it's now between;
A Pinto or a Zetec.
I'll take look at the Burton catalogue tonight.
Cheers,
Andy
I was reading the Westfield blurb last night and they say the choice is difficult between the 2 but both have advantages depending on application.
The Car engine will be a better cruiser and road going car. Also will last longer than a bike engine.
A bike engine give high performance from a lighter package and it most at home on a track not that it isn't any good on the road also the
engine do not last so long.

Zetec it is, I rang around some breakers today, they came back with £200 the other £150.
So I need to source;
clutch(what type)
a 1600 zetec flywheel
a set of carbs
exhaust manifold
Megajolt or omex
Polo Rad

OOhh... Tempted to offer you my 2.1 PINTO, with hot cam and twin 40 Dell Orto's, std 4 branch Exhaust, and a type 9 box
I was going to put this in my Viento, but it cried out to me for the V8

Tell me about your Pinto engine, Geoff. It could be just what I'm looking for.
Bob
Well it was going into the Viento, but I ended up with a V8.
Now I nearly have enough bits to make another 7. Front and back axles, rad, engine, box, wheels, etc. (not counting the Jago bits)
Wife says the Jago Geep has to go first.
Any Takers... Has a 1600 Xflow with Twin Choke Weber, 4 branch exhaust, Lumenition ignition, Escort Back Axle, and even a Log book on a Q plate. Its
SORN at the moment.
My Son has discovered that Dad was right, he cant afford to run a car whilst at Uni
I'm not sure I want to get rid of the Pinto engine and box, as its fairly good.
But I am thinking about it.. The Jago really needs to go first. (SWMBO has spoken)
Enough to make a half decent donor for a book 7.
