Carbon Fibre Matting
Worzey - 4/2/08 at 08:49 AM

Hi,

My boss is looking to get some carbon fibre matting approx no more than 1 foot square or smaller off-cuts to repair his plane.

Has anyone got any spare?

you can often find offcuts on eBay. I have a piece at home but its only something like 100 or 150mm wide, by perhaps 0.5m long. I can measure later if you're interested.

Repair a plane? Aren't there rules about that kind of thing?

I hope thats a model plane?

I used to own a light plane and found there was sod all I was alowed to do on it myself. All repairs have to use certifed materials plus be inspected before, during and after a repair.

No its a real plane, and aerobatics spec at that.

The guy I work for is the UK aerobatics champion so I assume he knows what he is doing.

He should know better then! You can not just pick up any old carbon matt (no batch numbers, specifications, expiry dates etc etc) and plonk it on an aircraft.... There are rules and regs to follow. I have spare carbon coming out of my ears, but there is no way I could give it to him for that!

As I'm not into planes I don't really know what the regulations are. Although it makes sense that certain rules should apply.

I'll stick to cars.
