charlierevell - 4/6/08 at 09:00 PM

Hi All,

does anyone know the BEST place to get 20L fuel cans for the track? I've looked all over the place and its not cheap!

I dont mind wether its metal or plastic as long as its fuel safe.
Think i need 4 (80L for the track plus about 20 and a bit already in the tank)

Cheers

80L for the track? REALLY? at todays prices thats over £100 in fuel just for a track day!

The quality of these can vary on the cheap ones.

Machine Mart ones are good and I think they are running some kind of VAT off promotion.

Try your local Army Surplus. We used to pick 'em up for a few quid.

Well I'm not sure how much fuel I will need, but a mate with his cossie used 80l+ @ Brands last year.
As long as i Had 80L I recon I'd be fine, the stuff i take home i can just use in it on the road.
I can get 100Miles to 18L's on the road.... We're off to Oulton which is quite a long track.

Best i can find is 4 for 3 @ 9.99 plus £6 postage.

which track day are you doing as some have petrol stations on site as Snetterton does, if not think machinemart may be the way to go unless you can borow some @£16.44 as my local Army Surplus store is after £20 each!

Yes - I did about 55 litres at Brunters and had to have half an hour off driving as I was running out. I think I will invest in another can as well.

Heh heh - you won't get 100 miles out of 18L's on a track.

Where did you get that price for cans? Were they 20 litre ones?

If you are filling your car from petrol cans (especially older ones) then you should really use a "Fuel Filtering" funnel so that you keep all the crap from the inside of the can out of your tank...

After a bad experience with gerry cans, I now do not put fuel into the car directly from a can. I first pour it into a 5l clear plastic bottle so I can see if there is any crap/water in there first.

army surplus or any offroad/land rover show - typically a fiver.

I have one you can have for free but it has needs a seal and welding as the bottom near the seam has gone so not that good really.

John Craddock (LR parts) have in the past done a deal for 4 cans but postage is gonna make it less of a bargain.

oooh lucky you they are still doing it; 4th item down

Looks like I might try the chap on ebay then, DKSPARES is the seller...
Makes them 8.99 Each

We're doing the FULL Oulton circuit, it seems quite long so I recon we'll get thru rather a lot of fuel!
2.8 Miles a lap, 10mpg...(Hopefully we'd get 15!) is about 45 miles to 20L. Thats 16 laps, per tank.

Anyone know how many laps i'd get in on an open pit lane?

It's not about the length of the lap or how many you do, it about how long you stay out. I like to give my car time to cool down between sessions and I don't stay out more than 15-20mins at a time.

I usually get about 6-8 sessions in the day and use two jerries, plus the full tank. The most I ever used was three jerries and the full tank but that was with three drivers caning the car all day.

DKSpares is DK Motorcycles in Stoke.
You may be able to save on postage by collecting on your way up to Oulton...
