Escort Mk1 vs Mk2 axle differences

I am using a Mk1 Escort axle.
The brake levers seem to be in a different position where they pass through the back plate to that of a Mk2.
Is this correct, or do I have it upside down!
The breather seems to be as the top and the drain at the bottom.

Wheel studs are UNF on the MK1
Most Mk1 axles used Girling single piston wheel cylinders with manual brake adjusters.

Propshaft flange on the diff is usually the small type.

mk1 springs are normally narrower but that shouldn't affect a kit build anyway.

also IIRC the Mk2 have 9in drums and the MK1 has 8in.

So can anyone say for sure if the brake arms at the backplate asre in a different position on the MK1 Escort axle?

No both MK1 & Mk2 used either size of rear brakes depending on the model & engine spec.

It ts a different back plate but the handbrake mechanism is in the same place and will still foul the panhard rod.

To clear the panhard rod many builders roatate the back plates through an angle and redrill them to line up with the holes in the axles --- Easy to do as it dosen't have to be supper accurate.


These days it is probably cheaper to switch to discs than rebuild a Mk1 or Mk2 drum setup.
