Does anyone know the going rate for weighing in a car at a scrappy?
My tintop (12 year old Micra) is coming to the end of its natural life. It's sills are frillier than Ann Summers' finest, the engine is
shagged, the brakes are shagged, the clutch is shagged, the bodywork is shagged.....
It's got a full tank of petrol though And I'll probably whip the MP3/cdplayer + speakers as I fitted them myself and they're not too
bad....
Now I could spend 20 on a new TRE and do all the welding required but I'd be left with a structually dodgey car. It was only Euro NCAP 2* when
new- I hate to think what it is now!!!!!
Considering the state it's in I doubt I could flog it (even on Ebay ) so it's off the scrappy it appears....
What's the going rate? I know scrap metal prices have been a bit crazy recently due to the demand in China + India..?? I'm desperately
trying to find a silver lining to this cloud....
Well my local scrap yard/breakers give £50 for a car, but if you take it to a metal scrap yard where they will just crush it straight away the going
rate is between £90 and £120 for an average car at the mo I believe

Trouble is- I'm sadly attached to the pile of rusty pants First car, had it since new etc etc.
i heard the other day something like £150p/t i work at a steel stockist and the price per t for mild hasd almost doubled in the last few month its crazy
catalytic converter - £25-40
Alloys - £6-10each
Steel - £110-150 a tonne
all ballpark depending on area and specific scrap merchant
hide big stones in behind the door panels and fill the tires with water
I drew £180 for an r reg escort the other day, pushed it in, they weighed it, crane grabbed it I removed wheels they took it away to environmentaly
strip it (remove oil etc)
car was on alloys but they have a problem with tyres round here, if you leave the wheels on they knock £5 each off what you should get.
I didn't do any of the above like concrete blocks etc as they know who I am plus they have the log book so can come looking for you if you pi$$
em off to much.
Giving the interior, carpets, seats etc a good blasting with the hose pipe won't do you no harm though
I asked last week and was told £150 ish a ton.
They said lead was down but steel was still good.
Again they didnt like tyres.

Which is some what amusing as tyres are usually shredded, melted and made into rubber mats etc and the steel sold as scrap
So rather than pay for it the rubber mat company charges others for the raw material THEY are using, now that is how to run a business
I got £170/t when I weighed some in about 2 weks ago.
Jeez! Sounds good to me!! That's more than the car's worth 2nd hand
Weighed my Astra in on Monday, £180/ton.
Whip the alternator off first and sell it on here
Don't forget to fill the petrol tank with water too! Double annoyance to them, as they'll probably drain the tanks into some container so
they can use the fuel themselves, and you'll contaminate the whole lot!
Just make sure they don't get the V5, and you've cut out the VIN number.
Oh, and take the wheels off an bin them seperately down the local tip. They'll knock money off for having to get rid of the tyres, as has been
said.
My local place gave £75 for a car delivered, £50 collected, last time I asked. That was ~6 months ago though.
