Can anyone turn me a part please?

Morning all,

I'm hoping someone on here may be able to turn a part for me in mild steel as per the drawing. I'm also hoping that same person may be able to supply the mild steel hexagon material as well.

It's to revive a broken part on a car bike carrier.

ETA - I can email the drawing to anyone able to help as well.

Could you not manage with an m8x75 setscrew and put nough nuts on it make up the 25mm?

That would probably be stronger than an machined part which could be weak at the root of the thread.

Fair suggestion and something I have considered.

Here's a photo showing what I'm trying to fit it to. It slides inside the hexagonal alloy tube and is held in place with a rivet.

Having investigated sourcing a replacement from the manufactyurer it's €75 from Italy as you have to purchase the complete assembly, not just bits to repair.

ditto, and I'd put epoxy on the thread to lock the nuts. A far cheaper option plus you could used a higher grade bolt than would be easily turned.

Does it have to be monolithic or can the thread be a stud bonded into a tapped hole in the hex section?

Do you want a counterbore in the back of the hex section for short rivets or are you planning to drill and tap once fitted?

Finally, do you definitely want it in mild steel or is stainless ok?

I'm happy to do it one evening this week, FOC, unless anyone wants to offer to do it on work's time. Just PM your address

1. It doesn't have to be monolithic - the thread can certainly be stud bonded into a tapped hole in the hex section (the rivet will go right through both parts).

2. No counterbore recessary, it won't actually be a rivet it'll be a bolt with nylon lock nut holding it in place (not a rivet).

3. Stainless should be OK, I chose mild steel as it's generally lower cost and a bit stronger.

If you go for stainless be careful when drilling your fastening hole not to work harden it while doing that

Thanks for the link.

I need mine to be 20mm across flats to fit inside the existing alloy hexagonal tube. Alo need an M8 male thread coming off to match the hole and nut on the mating part.


ETA - looking further on that website they do a 19mm across flats one, but unfortunately it's M12. Same seems true on Fleabay.

Just don't tell SWMBO I was machining this while I said I was making hardware for the new drive gates I don't know why but other people's projects always seem more interesting than mine.

Some feedback on the part "Indykid" very kindle made for my car bike rack.

It works just perfectly. Put to the full test yestertday transporting 3 MTBs to a bike park and back. Super easy to to fit the 2nd bike on the rack now (easier than it was before). All 3 bikes taken there and back easily and without issue.

Happy kids, bike rack remains in service and very content parents
