Anybody have any idea about how much and where i would get a copy of solidworks from.

Actually its free if you are a student now
You need to speak to your university CAD man though to get it.

I assuming your talking about a legit licensed copy here.
Last time I talked to the CAD man at uni he said they only had a licence for use on the uni server and students had to get there own seperately for
their PCs.
Last time i checked (six mounths ago) student version cost about £100 and was just the basic 3D/2D.

Yep, its all legit and liscenced. Our Uni has purchased more seats than we have computers. So you can download Solidworks from their website and put
in the university liscence details and it lets you use it. It was all done through our Solidworks rep to the university. Its a new thing though, only
been able to do it for a couple of months. Try speaking to your CAD man at uni again and see what he says.
