Gas Cylinders

Does anyone know where you can get Argon/Co2 cylinders from at sensible prices?
I picked up a MIG set at the w-end and was gob smacked at how quickly I went through one of those pathetic little disposable cylinders and what a waste not to make them refillable
Being used to industrial units I don't think I'll be able to stand using those for too long.
I'm gonna try a few contacts later but wondered what others did.

How about pub Co2 bottles? although i dont think you would be able to get them filled at your local BOC supplier...

The disposables ones come in 2 different filled capacity's the small one (11ltr?) dosnt last long but the larger ones(26ltr?) are a lot better and im on my third to weld my entire chassis which ive only some brakets left todo, i dont think its too bad, otherwise id have to rent a bottle from BOC.

Pub CO2 are readily available from some bottle gas suppliers. I pay £12 for
refils from Wirral Bottle Gas, although that's a fat lot of use to you in Essex
Ring around, Yellow Faces is probably the best.
Not sure how much the bottle itself is as I...ahem...aquired mine.
Although this probably the cheapest gas option, it doesn't perform quite
as well as a CO2/Ar mix. You get a lot more splatter and some say a (slightly)
inferior weld although I get good results with pub gas.

Didnt i hear someone say once that a friendly landlord may be able to loan you a bottle for a small consideration then just get it refilled with the other pub bottles?

I guess this depends if you are a very regular pub goer or not.

There's an empty CO2 pub bottle in a hedge bottom near me at the moment. I have a rental argon/co2 from Energas and a spare pub bottle for if I run out. The rental only works out about £1 a week so I don't think it's excessive for something that makes a difference.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

That sounds a more sensible price than BOC's £15 a month plus £65 initial charge plus refil costs
Unfortunately Energas don't come down this far south.
Shame your "hedge" bottle is in the midlands or I'd nab that.

Thanks for that info Mark.
That might be worth exploring.

Just rung the local airproducts agent and said i could pop in this afternoon and open an account and walk away with a bottle, far cheaper than BOC too!

Thanks for the tip mark!

I use CO2 fire extinguishers, they can be adapted to fit the standard reg and I welded the entire car plus other bits with less than 2 full bottles.Check your local fire extinguisher agent and they may be able to supply one fitted with a screw top instead of the lever valve mine charges £10 for a refill , alternaytively i think Wilco car parts also supply refillable Co2 bottles for a sensible price .

Argon, shed loads of it.

On the subject of pub gas, landlords are not charged a deposit on the bottle,
(unlike nitrogen, used for gnats p***, sorry, larger) so around here they will
sell you a bottle for the price of the gas.

Green King pubs anyway.
