Hotwire type I believe, it is the attached if that helps (although photo is crap)

hot wire, have you tried thinners to clean it and WD40 to lubricate ?

darren does it move at all make any buzzing noises.

mine is the same hotwire system and at switch off it always gives a buzz and a click - I belive this is normal.
Mine seems to work as even with a very lumpy cam tickover is maintained

does bugger all, always in the fully re-tracted position i.e letting air in all the time.

Tried the old wd40 thing o no avail, then accidentally shut th boot on it and cracked it. Now it definitely doesn't do anything.
