Heat protection

I need to line the upper part of my engine bay with reflective heat matting. The cheapest I can find is from CBS at £22 per sq metre.

Anyone know of a better price anywhere?

*edit* I just realised that I have a part roll of thermal insulating foil lined bubble wrap commonly used in wall insulation - does anyone see any reason why I shouldn't use this in the engine bay?

yes - FIRE. The indoor radiator insulator/reflector stuff is unlikekly to catch fire if a raditor urst and sprays it with hot water, under the engine bay is a different matter.

I looked at the heat materual stuff and RD were the cheapest or try ebay.

I bought some but in the end used a thin piece of ali, held about 10 mm away from the bonnet - n area above exhaust - so the air in between acts as an insulator - works pretty well. I see no reason why some glass wool (lof insulation) cannot be sandwitched in between the plate.

or scrap yard?

BTW - why do you feel you have need forthis - exhaust getting hot/too close to soeomthing?

Good point, although this stuff seems to be self extinguishing but its not worth testing it to the limit

My V6 cam covers are 15mm away from the fibreglass and although it probably won't get dangerously hot I just want to minimise any expansion & contraction as it will likely show up any weak areas in my fibreglassing grafts.
The exhaust is also under the panel and although not as close as the engine, the whole system was glowing red hot when we were mapping it on the rollers - and that heat has to go somewhere too.

The fire blanket idea is a good one, but I think it might look a bit tatty after a while as they tend to be quite absorbent without the aluminium coating - and surely painting it wouldn't help the fire proofing properties

The felt stuff is more for soundproofing which is quite bulky - ideally I need about 1mm thick.
