Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

0.85(mm?) wall section at the bottom, but 1.15(mm?) at the top. Intentional?
The change in diameter over the length is quite mild so could you not flare some tube, or are the dimensions critical?

Cheers for all the replies guys.
Sorry for not putting much information, had it all in my head assuming everyone else could read my mind
Its a steering adaptor for escort TRE's to fit in my BMW hubs. So some sort of steel would probably be best.
Yes the different taper is intentional, the escort taper is 1/8 i believe whereas the BMW taper is 1/10 IIRC.
Have sent several u2us to flak but no reply so seeing if someone else will give it a go?

ideally you'd need a taper reamer to do the internal bit - normally I'd give this a go, but think my kit won't give you the accuracy
you need
however there is a man just down the road from me that does this stuff for a living - so if your stuck I can draw it up properly and get him to make
them
(his prices are normally very reasonable)

Best way would be to spin in from tube. Tapered wall would come naturally then.
Googe someone local with a spinning lathe.

BMW TREs are really long and there threads are different to the escort rack so i can just use them, so this seems like the best option i can come up

i was pondering this one last night though not for your specific application. it was for inverting the TRE on an mx5 upright. i came to the idea of
machining the steering arm of the upright out to a parallel bore with a small counterbore, then turning a tophat bush with a taper machined into it.
the wide end of the taper would be at the brim end of the tophat and a tight clearance fit into the steering arm and bearing locked in place.
making the top hat slightly shorter than the steering arm would mean the washer under the nut would make it all captive in the steering arm and locked
tight in place. saves machining a taper on the o.d. but does mean you'd need to machine the upright

how about drill the upright out parallel, and then just bolt a good rosejoint onto it? Is the escort rack m12 or m14?

I believe the rack is m14,
Just woundering if the expense of rose joints are worth it?

What, a tenner or have someone machine something?
I'd go fo taper reamer to start with (as that might be considered the right thing to do), then go for rosejoints (or spherical bearings
itwywtct).

well itd be a tenner each side, and getting the hubs machined, then the hole would be too big for an M14 bolt so would need an adaptor anyway

just looking at your sizes - if the BMW is a 1/10 wouldn't that make the outside dia. of the fat end 16mm not 15.9mm ?
