arent they pretty poo engines though? my mate used to build 2.0l 16vs from an audi bottom end and a vw mk2 golf 16v head, apparently quite common & more powerfull than the mk3 engine? just an idea

far from it - fantastic engine - robust, high reving & powerful (170bhp once de-restricted), but the gearbox ratios were pants....so pants quafe did a new gear set specifically for the car that got rave reviews. Will never forget in gear acceleration in 2nd

I think he meant 'isn't the 8v a poo engine'. And he'd be right, it is. Even strapping on a G60 charger doesn't make it worth bothering with.

If it's an option at all i'd go for a 16v swap, it's so superior to the 8v for track use it's just not funny. The trickest 8v i've seen in person had thousands spent on it, 2.1L mental cam, nice head (Blydenstein RIP), etc etc etc. On a rolling road day it would just about match a fairly standard 2.0L 16v.

Don't believe anyone who tells you the 8v 'pulls better from low down, more torque'. It hasn't, comparing standard engines the 16v actually has more torque all the way from idle up. 8v's feel more torquey low down because that's all they've got, whereas a valver does the same up to 4000rpm and then wakes up

Can you guess what my last 3 cars were powered by?

yes the 2.0l 8v is the engine i was refering to, sorry for any confusion.

the 2.0l 16v, as i recall (its been a while since ive kept tabs on the VAG scene) was a cracker
