I believe theres a small matter called ringing and its illegal.
Doing what he does just avoids SVA and you end up with an illegal car...and any good insurance company can spot the difference between a dutton and a
7....
Its been covered here several times...do a search and you'll soon see....
Just DONT do it!

Im guessing that you can change the bodywork no problems and maybe modify the chassis slightly without having to worry about re-registering it. If he
was to completely change the chassis he would prob have to register it as a different car and SVA it.

You can keep the chassis number and not re-register or sva if you keep the original chassis afaik. As soon as you build a new chassis you have to go
thru the whole SVA process....
So just changing the bodywork as greggors84 says should be fine.
It then becomes like turning a Beetle into a beach buggy (for want of a better example...keep the chassis, mod the body) and you have to do whatever
you need to do there... check with DVLA to be safe...

In theory, if you started off with the dutton chassis and cut bits off and re-welded it until it was a locost chassis it would be ok (IMVHO!!) though
this would take a hec of a lot of work and would be more difficult than building a scratch locost IMO. If you kept a photo record of this work, you
could prove it was hte same, modified/repaired chassis to the police or dvla if necessary...
all IMVHO (ducks for cover)

As the others have said, keeping the chassis and modifying the body is ok, but not changing the chasssis.
