USB to serial convertors usually work OK with most car diagnostic software at least with XP

I run a netbook eeepc, about £200 with a USB to serial adapter, which works great with megasquirt.
Very robust, long battery life, and not too precious if it gets damaged.

I'm sure I have a spare IBM Thinkpad T40 in the garage, will check later what ports it has.
The T20-23 range deffo have Serials, and go for peanuts on eBAY now, I use a T23, very robust reliable little machine.
