FZR1000 engine
I have been offered an FZR 1000 engine which is the forerunner to the R1. It is an 89/90 model year and all parts included it is £475
Is this engine likely to be any good?
Am I better paying the extra for an R1 or is the R1 carb engine much the same?

FZR lump is canted right over so takes up more space than the R1, The R1 makes more power so go with the R1

FZR makes 145 BHP @ 10000 RPM and 107 Nm @ 8500
R1 makes 150 RHP @ 10000 RPM and 108 Nm @ 8500.
There isn't much in it except for the price and that the R1 may have had some improvements that I Don't know about.

FZR is five gear and not 6 like the R1 ( I think the final gearing is also a bit lower.. not what you want)

You can have my FZR1000 engine and parts (everything there) for £400 and everything is there plus V5 and frame for £50 so you can use the V5 for age
related plate.

With a decent diff ratio it's not a problem.
According to Haynes (also included) the engine sits at 35 degrees off vertical.
Also says 6 gears on 1000 only 5 on 600.

Chunkielad,
What age is your engine?
is it a 6 speed?
Do you have everything? including fuel pump, and clocks?

for information. The FZR1000 5 speed has a wider range gearbox than the R1.
1st is slightly shorter, giving 48 MPH with 195/50/15s and a 3.62 diff Vs 53 in the R1.
2nd and 3rd are much the same
4th and 5th on the R1 are spaced either side of 4th on the FZR
top speed on both bikes is 121MPH but at 11500 on the FZR and 11750 on the R1.
the benefit of 4th / 5th on the R1 vs 4th on the FZR is probably only noticable on the track at above motorway speeds.

Didn't know that mate! I'm sure it's 6 spd - manual says....
Part 5 (in transmission diagram) Sixth pinion gear
Part 11 Sixth wheel gear.
Bugger all the sites say 5! Hmmmm

it's a 5 speed, I had one
However, the haynes manual is the same for the fzr1000 and yzf750r.
The yzf750r had a 6 speed in the same casing, so is a common swap for people with a FZR1000 who want to upgrade to a 6-speed.
HTH,
Adam.

Are those horsepower figues correct for an 89/90 model? Thinking back around that time when I used to read MCN religiously every week at my nans house
on a Sunday (long story!), I don't recall the earlier ones being that pokey, maybe those figures are from a Thunder-Ace or a later FZR (they did
them up to the mid 90's didnt they?).

Mines a '93. The 6th gear section in the manual I refered to was in the FZR1000 section NOT the 750 - maybe I should go and check.

Oh yeah I don't have the clocks but they aren't needed to run it (no gadgetry)
Everything else is there - CDI, fuel pump, even the sprocket if you fancy adapting it rather than buying an adaptor.
Oh and the frame and V5 will now be free as I'll have no use for it

Yep, the Rocket was meant to be pretty good, though it would have to be for £30k+ !
