Don't bother buying one, Build one.
If you built a locost with a 1.6 capri engine the insurance would be far cheaper as would building the car. £250 according to the Haynes book.

Only 16 and i have already had my midlife crisis

i think its the early E36's (1991/1992) that were 1.6, not sure though, a trawl around on google will probably sort you out.

Don't touch a 316 under 1000, a lot of 3 series are hitting the auctions just now the dealers have taken them in as trade-ins and just dump them at auction because they don't want to sully thier showrooms with older cars. However the minium auction price for anything BMW that is decent and looks it won't cost a fortune to fix is 800+buyers premium. So anything below the 800 in a small adds is either a money pit or being sold by congential idiot.

For about 1000 to 1200 you can find a very decent 3 series with FSH --- hint automatics are cheapest and less likely to have been abused.
