Did you know?
Most automotive engines rotate clockwise when viewed from the front, except many Honda engines.
Did you know that?

Well worth knowing about the honda engine bit. Could be embarrassing with 5 reverse gears![](/images//smilies/bigsmile.gif)

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

Presumably Honda bike engines rotate clockwise when viewed from the front then?
Which makes it all the more strange the Honda choose to rotate their car engines the other way??
Curious indeed.....

It stems back to the time when engines were started from the front with a cranking handle. As most people are right handed (or at least before left
handedness was accepted) it is the easiest way to crank the engine over.
I claim my free Civic type-R!

Yes, so why did Honda decide to make some of their engines rotate anti-clockwise. I dont think Japan were producing cars at the time we still had
starting handles! Besides that would make the majority of Japs left handed then?
Knowing the Japanese its probably just to difficult and different... (sorry I am in a cynical mood tonight)

Rotation direction will depend which end of the engine they put the gear boxes on FWD cars

Corvair engines also rotate the "wrong" way.

wrong goes wrong, it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.' Douglas Adams

Some old Honda bike engines turn the wrong way round too - CBX750 for example

The Japanese kick started their motor industry by copying Western design.
There is a story, think it related to B Series engine that the Japs copied. some blokes from UK saw this and yet it did not look right. Then one of
them twigged - it was an exact copy but mirror image
.. so it probably spun anti-clockwise. I wonder if this is in any way related?
