Nothing more cheap and cheerful than a long stick with notches in it You can even make it yourself for nowt

depending how desparate you are i'm looking at making an LED one - think i've got it sorted in concept, just need
a) to build it
b) an idiot to take full responsbility, sign lots of disclaimers that aren't legal in English law and risk blowing himself up trying it.

using comparators or a PIC would mean no changes to the sender.

you would limit the current through the sender naturally - even if there is a probkem, it is unlikely to cause an explosion since there will be little air (mostly petrol fumes) in the tank - if petrol fumes were that easy to explode, then noone would ever have starting problems!

Thats the bit i'm struggling with at the moment. My electronics are "poor" and i haven't a clue how to do this bit.
