Mk3 Golf GTi

Been looking about for a while on the bay of E, Autotrader and various Volkswagen forums and thought it wouldn't hurt to ask on here too.

I'm after a Mk3 Golf GTi 16v 3door.

Doesn't have to be immaculate but no dogs!
Anyone have one for sale or know of any?

Why a Mk3? Mk1 with 1800 engine is faster, way cooler and cheap at the moment! Best car I ever owned. . . until it got run over by a bus!

I do agree it's faster and cooler, however finding a decent one that isn't stupid money, round here anyway, is rather difficult.
I did expect a flurry of 'No buy a Mk1 or 2' but I'm kinda set on a Mk3 (but that does depend what turns up!! )

Can't help but say I'd go for a Mk2 Blue or Green 16v with big bumpers and BBS x spokes.

Then again, for the price a good one gets, you could get a shabby VR6.

I expect I'll view quite a few shabby ones before I find the right one!

Good god no, they can barely pull the skin off a rice pudding, let alone haul around the lardy mk3

Look for one with decent bodywork above anything else. The mechanicals are easily fixable and cheap enough bits from GSF, bodywork is a bit more of an issue. Oddly enough mk3's actually rust more than mk2's, they just don't make em like they used to...

Keep an eye out on the classifieds as clubgti.com and edition38.com, but tbh your best bet to get a reasonable one for a good price is the likes of autotrader, cars go for a bit more money in enthusiast circles (just look at the f'kin stupid money oak green mk2's go for )

The 8 valves are less likely to have been thrashed. Gary boys etc have the 16valves.

Get a Mk1 and put a VR6 or g60 lump in it.

When I saw the title on the front page, I was really hoping it was a for sale ad!

Ive been looking for one for a little while now, exactly the same 3 door 16v MK3.

A lad at work is selling his for a very good price, but just needs to sort his replacement car out, keeping my eye out for others too though.

Eh? Not at all, the little scrotes get the driver or a 1.4cl and tart it up to look like a GTI. The extra buying cost and insurance on a 16v/VR6 means that they're generally owned by more 'mature' drivers.

Any hot hatch of that kind of age is going to have been given some stick over it's life, that's what they were built for. The 16v isn't any worse than the 8v in that respect, if anything it's probably better as that's how the engine is designed to be driven, it's not a very lazy motor.

Thanks for the link Ray, should have looked there too, my friend and his camper frequent that site.

I'm in no big rush so I'll take my time in finding a good one. I've read that any rust shows poorly repaired accident damage and that they are usually rust fee (in comparison to any other 10yr old car).
Can anyone tell me what a GTi 16v's performance is like and what they are like to live with?!

Chris, when do you plan to visit your folks?
