A new job
Evening all,
I know this is a long, and a bit of a random shot, but anyone know of any decent jobs going for a young talented person? Plently of good A levels, but
lack of a degree are hampering my progress somewhat!  I have tried uni, but hated being bored 24/7 with the first easy years of my courses (masters
in Aero and Auto eng!) Looking for something technical really, but if not, just loads of money will do!  Starting to get a bit down about lack of a
career in my current place, and since me and the missus brought a house, I can't go back to uni and try a more interesting course ( like
motorsports eng.)
Any help/hints ideas/job offers welcome!

Im studying motorsport engineering at uni. I'm really struggling to find a placement in the industry, and I'm at the point of giving
I've tried so many people. You need a back way in to get into the industry. My plan now is to try to get in after uni, if that fails, I'm
joining the army, wish I had of done instead of uni . . .

Dilley, not really my thing, and the missus would complain me thinks!
Matt, Army won't take me as I have asthma, and you need to be symptom free for 4!! years otherwise I'd probably be a captian or higher in
the REME by now, as they offered me a place when I was 17/18.

Took me 18months after qualifying, It's not a nice experience.
Can't really help you in the jobs front, But you sound in the same position as me - Aero/Auto engineering.
I found most of the jobs offered hardly any pay, turned down a few, as I couldn't afford to relocate on the money they were offering me, but the
one I accepted was right under my nose!
Placements dept in my uni were a complete waste of time, and I'm starting to realise It wasnt just mine!

You haven't tried Mech Eng yet  I'm in my second year and sorting a placement out with Rolls Royce for next year (fingers crossed)
followed by another two years at uni Good luck finding something!
If you're really interested in the technical stuff, what was it about your courses that made you bored?
And finally, how do the open university courses stack up to employers if you find you can't get anything without a degree?

The Aero course had a mostly general first two years, at which point you fully specialised, as most places do, or so I'm told. The tech stuff I
enjoy most involves getting your hands grubby now and again. The more often the better really, as I'm not a huge fan of sitting in front of a PC
all day. The main problme was my A levels I think as I came out with 3 A's and a C, with 2 AS levels, so even the maths/booky bits were fairly
easy. It didn't help that I could pass the first semster with good grades and not even bother going to lectures! 
The last time I looked at the OU, they were worse than useless for any Mech Eng based things, they had one BEng, which was the most useless general
degree I've seen.
