4x4s good or bad

No discussions.

No, "I need one because" answers.
No, "I hate them because" answers.

Just say yay or nay.

I would love a Toyota 4X4 but I hate paying loads of cash to run one.

If they did 50mpg then I would have one

I like 4 wheel drive vehicles. I remember going to Donnington and watching the Audis 4 wheel drifting round the corners. Lovely

I just don't like the way that 4*4 / SUVs have become status symbols which basically mean they're a in-your-face tasteless way of making sure everyone knows you've just come into some money. Way un-cool.... Typical example- a Range Rover lowered so its got less clearance than a normal car and needs the BHP it packs to haul around 4 tons of "phat ICE".... Pillocks.

Hate 4*4s. They should only be allowed for commercial/agricultural or work purposes, not domestic.

They have a higher rolling road resistance and therefore damage roads more.

They obstruct roads. Some roads where I live are easily driven up and down with normal cars either side but are not wide enough for a 4*4 and saloon/hatchback to pass.

They pose a higher danger to cyclist/motorcyclist/small cars (7) and pedestrians.

Makes it harder for a cyclists or motorcyclists to pass in slow traffic because they're too wide.

THEY WILL KILL A 7 AND PROBABLY WON'T EVEN SEE YOU.

People always say I have one because they're safer. Get many 5* ncap cars now.

They are less stable than cars, having a high centre of gravity and soft springs to give large wheel articulation. They fall over in emergency manouvres - see the 5th gear test of a range rover versus a jaguar.

They're longer and wider than ordinary cars making urban congestion worse. (Bigger cars = longer queues for the same number of vehicles) (They also get stuck behind people waiting to turn right and so hold everyone else up)

They use more fuel, twice as much as a normal car.

They're less safe in collisions with immovable objects like trucks or trees. They even tend to come off worse in head on collisions with cars IF they don't ride over the car. Either way is bad.

They're good for driving through forests and deserts and rivers and up mountains with no roads. If you need to do these then you need a 4x4. If you need a car, buy a car; they're better.

the only arguments against them i see as valid are the wastefulness of them with fuel, and the sadness of the status symbol behind it. The rest can be easily discounted, ie lots of estates are bigger, the safety factor is down to how you drive it - i drive badly and dont crash, if i put more effort (probably that should say 'if i was more responsible' i would be even less likely to.

The only thing that stops me getting one is the fuel costs, im tight as a nats arse. All the knockers, have you driven one? Its great to have a raised view of the road. I would get a navara for work but in all honesty, a van is more suited. But then i would need a second vehicle too.

Locosts are for drivers. Drivers do trackdays. Drivers push hard. Drivers slide off (now and then). Trailers carry offed Locosts. 4X4s tow trailers ergo Locosts need 4X4s. QED

I think it depends whether you mean this

or these

First pic is very bad, second one is even worse on fuel, but have an actual point to them. Which makes it just fine. Especially if your mate's paying for the fuel!

I find the continuation of this topic highly amusing... in my original post here I complained about incompetent drivers of big vehicles, not the vehicles themselves. If anyone wants a big 4x4, MPV or whatever, I won't complain. I just ask that they learn to drive them safely.

Still - it helped to pass the time... I'll put my wooden spoon away now, and go and find my coat...
