Rear disks and calipers.

Am i right in thinking the best place to get rear disks and calipers is from a Xr4x4?

late abs sierras had rear discs, though need the abs sensor splines removing from the hub or the mk upright modifying to fit.

Gremlin,

it depends why you want disks on the rear?, for good looks or for functional stopping power.

The only benefit to be had by putting disks on the rear in such a light car (imo) is when you are entering into serious motorsport or just for pose value!

given that you will have disks on the front which will give plenty stopping power for a light car, drums are more than adequate at the rear.

But again it depends on your intended future use.

from a maintainence point of view it is easier to have disks all round.

Rear XR4x4 disks would be a bit overkill to be honest, any rear disked sierra would suffice and you will probably pay more for scrappy disks and callipers off and XR just because its an XR.

All in my opinion, ad waiting to be corrected!

Bear in mind the 4x4 having an LSD which may or may not be of interest!

lsd got nowt to do with the disks though.

I suppose if the cost of the xr4x4 lsd shafts, disks and callipers was equal to the cost of lsd and Text xr4x4 shafts and brakes you would be daft not to have the xr items but its not really worth the extra money just for the brakes.

Its going to be on a R1 engined car so will hopefully have a LSD 3.62:1 diff anyway.

(I think thats right one for bike and think its off a xr4x4?)

If normal disks will be ok which sierras am i going to find them on?

as far as i'm aware, all but the cossies have the same rear discs ie abs models and xr4x4. As said above the xr4x4 have an lsd.

Bear in mind though, that you can only get 14" wheels over the rear discs, 13" don't fit and foul on the caliper.

My rear disc set up came from a sierra GLSi,same calipers as used on granada/scorpio's and 4x4.

Ther is a bigger rear brake version used on sierra cosworth cars but i've only seen one and that was a conversion,so maybe they are mostly the the smaller type.

andy Hewing at donor spares has a pair of rear calipers on ebay at £14.99,they sell them at £25 anyway so plenty about.

go ebay and do a search "rear calipers" usually plenty there.
