Exup
I have just been looking at this. According to most wiring diagrams you don't need the Exup and when I ordered my Exhaust from MK they also
confirmed that an Exup is not needed. You can replace the pullies etc with resistors etc. Do a search on here for R1 wiring and I am sure you will
find it.

Either the EXUP valve or the circuit to trick the electronics into thinking its there is needed if you use the standard clocks otherwise you get a
fault code showing which is the case here

Can you just bolt the pullies to the chassis and miss out the exup valve?
I am using smith clocks so shouldn't have an error message?
Just read the above again and seen what I missed. You want the pullies etc. The valve in the exhaust is not what yoiu want Doh!
Will see if I can find the diagram for a fake replacement

If it is a 5JJ engine and clocks you will get a tacho fault when the ignition is on but engine is not running. Once the engine starts the fault code
disappears. I drove my 5JJ engined phoenix for 3 years and never bothered about the exup. Save the weight and complexity.
Cheers

once the engine is started the rev counter every 10 seconds goes up to 7000 rpm and then returns to 0 so I think I will need it.

Oh no you won't. Read Jims reply above. For the 5JJ model, all you do is simply short the exup wires together and you ONLY get the tacho error
signal when the engine is OFF and the ignition is ON (not a common condition). Once engine is running there will be no error.

Jim's reply never mentioned shorting the wires out which is the difference we have at the moment. Ben's car is doing exactly as he says -
cycling through the fault code with the engine running and the EXUP wiring not connected to anything.

On the other hand, if you fit the exup unit, it plugs straight in and has far less chance of going wrong.
I plugged away at ebay for a long time with a limit of £20 to spend until I finally got lucky with one - just sits under the nose cone doing whatever
it needs to do out of the way.

I have a brand new exup motor you can have for £30. PM me if interested.
I tried all the tricks to get rid of the fault code on my 98 R1 and nothing worked so I ended up just wiring the tacho into the coilpacks instead of
the ECU (my tacho can accept high input voltages). No power is lost, still had a healthy 130bhp at the wheels )

Just for completeness
Connect Black/red and White/red wires together that would normally connect to the EXUP - hey presto no tacho tango (except in the conditions I
mentioned above).
Its a trick that has been known about for many years. Its described on Rich Miles R1 striker build (http://www.btinternet.com/~richard.d.miles/ )
which for anyone building an R1 kit car should be a must read
No need to carry around a useless piece of metal under the dash

Sorry I forget to mention that and took it as a granted.
In my defence it was 5 years ago that I wired it up
