I need to start chopping them up to make my front uprights useable. QUestion is what am i to expect when i cut it open?
Oil going everywhere? Is it pressurized?

Its an E36, ill take pictures of the finished product to help inpsire you if youd like b184?

arent they inserts in the strut tube ?

if its 50mm tube just buy some and start from there .

no its not just an insert like a macpherson, the damper is bolted onto the upright.

Ive seen that mod b184 but ive had ago and the surfaces are exactly easy to line up so i think this is the best way.


And the answer... Pressurized oil shot up about 2 m glad i wore some goggles just in case

If they are gas/oil this is what you get, under pressure so hold upright, drill a small hole at the top to vent the pressure away.

Its now an oil only damper, so just get a hacksaw and cut around where you want the cap welded on, it will bleed oil but only a pint or so.

Cut around the outside as the middle rod will be quite hard, 2 minute job.

NB save the rod, useful for poking things and making nice chrome levers etc.
